OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Sophomore
Tyler Thompson (Napean, Ontario/Mother Teresa) finished with two goals and two assists to lead the fourth-seeded Lycoming College men's lacrosse team, but a seven-goal first quarter helped spark No. 1 Stevenson University to a 22-7 MAC Commonwealth Championship semifinal win at Mustang Stadium on Wednesday night, May 2.
The Mustangs (11-6 overall) move on to host No. 3 Widener University in the MAC Commonwealth Championship final on Saturday, May 5. The Warriors end their season 10-7 overall, the program's first winning season since 2011 and the team returned to the postseason for the first time since 2014, notching a conference tournament first round win, 6-5, over Lebanon Valley in triple overtime on Monday, April 30.
Sophomore
Drew Collins (Victor, N.Y./Victor) added a goal and two assists, as Lycoming had six players find the net. Junior
Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) added a goal and four groundballs and junior
Austin Arroyo (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) had five groundballs and two caused turnovers. Senior
Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) also had two caused turnovers and a groundball.
The four-point game from Thompson gave him 53 points on the season (16 points, 37 saves) while Collins finished the year with 51 (35 goals and 16 assists). Junior
Andrew Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), who had one goal, led the team with 57 points off 48 goals and nine assists. The three players with 50 points marked the first time since 2014 that the team had a 50-point scorer (Matt McCaffer, 55) and the first time since 2000 that three players reached the mark (Mike Bonnes, 77; Todd Lightner, 77; Shawn Rosa, 86).
The Mustangs opened the game with the first 10 goals in the first 20 minutes before Rode got the Warriors on the board with a 15-yard blast. Lycoming added two more goals late in the period to make it 14-3 at the break.
Lycoming's offense heated up with four goals in the third quarter while Stevenson scored three, as a last-second goal from
Conor Riorden (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) made it a 10-goal game heading into the fourth, but that was as close as Lycoming could get.
Stevenson was led by eight goals and two assists from Ethan Christensen and J.T. Thelan added six goals and an assist.
In net, junior goalkeeper
Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) posted eight saves in 47 minutes and freshman
Tim O'Connor (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) notched five saves in 13 minutes. Sam Ross stopped nine shots to earn the win for the Mustangs.
