BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Sophomore
Drew Collins (Victor, N.Y./Victor) rolled in front of the net, turned and fired into the left corner with 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter, lifting the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team to a dramatic 5-4 non-conference win over SUNY Brockport on Saturday afternoon, March 24, at Shriver Stadium.
Â
The goal helped save a remarkable performance by junior
Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), as the goalkeeper stopped 22 of Brockport's 40 shots, tied for ninth-most stops in a game in program history, as he stopped 14 shots in the second half, including nine in the third quarter alone.
Â
Brockport (2-5 overall) tied the game at four with 7:35 remaining and won the ensuing faceoff, but a Tenant save after a run of four shots ended the threat. Lycoming responded with a three-shot possession, but a save by Brockport's Dallas Meyers gave Brockport the ball with 2:08 to play. Brockport cleared it, but sophomore
Sam Pollock (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) caused a turnover with a solid check after pass inside near the crease. The Warriors cleared the ball and called timeout with 44 seconds left, setting up Collins' goal in front of the net.
Â
The Warriors (4-3 overall) struck first in the first quarter, with senior
Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West) scoring five minutes into the game. Lycoming added two man-up goals in the second quarter, getting scores from junior
Andrew Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and sophomore
Shain Quigley (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford Area) to take a 3-0 lead before Brockport scored with two seconds left in the half to make it a two-goal game at the break.
Â
Collins scored his first of two goals in transition midway through the third quarter off a give from Pollock to make it 4-1 before Brockport began its comeback, which included two goals in a 40-second span to tie the game off a score from Patrick Sheridan midway through the fourth.
Â
Pollock led the Warriors defensively with three caused turnovers and an assist and Quigley, junior
Austin Arroyo (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin), junior
Collin Bitsko (Farmingdale, Pa./Freehold Township) and junior
Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) each had three ground balls.
Â
Sheridan led the Golden Eagles with two goals. Michael Caternolo won 8-of-12 faceoffs and Joe Chiarmonte caused three turnovers. Dallas Meyers stopped 10 of Lycoming's 31 shots.
Â
The Warriors open MAC Commonwealth play on Thursday, March 29, when they head to Lebanon Valley for a 4 p.m. game.
