Second-quarter goals lift Warriors past LVC, 8-4

ANNVILLE, Pa. – A four-goal second quarter flurry in the quarter's final six minutes helped the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team post an 8-4 win over Lebanon Valley College in both teams' MAC Commonwealth opener on Thursday afternoon, March 29, at Arnold Field.

For the second straight game, the Warriors (5-3 overall, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) allowed just four goals while Lebanon Valley (5-4 overall, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) fired 32 shots and forced junior Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) to make 13 saves, but just three in the second half.

Lycoming dominated in the possession game, winning 11-of-15 faceoffs and picking up 38 ground balls, while Lebanon Valley picked up just 23. Junior Alex Artur (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) won 9-of-11 at the 'x', picking up five ground balls and junior Austin Arroyo (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) also picked up five and caused two turnovers.

Lycoming's offense was unselfish throughout, with seven of the team's eight goals being assisted, with sophomore Tyler Thompson (Napean, Ontario/Mother Teresa) leading the way with three assists to go with two goals. Junior Andrew Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) added two goals and an assist and sophomore Drew Collins (Victor, N.Y./Victor) also scored twice.

Thompson scored the lone unassisted goal by Lycoming just 2:32 into the game before Lebanon Valley tied the score 10 minutes into the first quarter. Lycoming took the lead when Ream found Collins for a score with 1:31 left in the quarter.

The Warriors broke open the game with the four-goal flurry in the second quarter, with Thompson scoring with 6:00 left before Ream scored two in a row in a 70-second span and Thompson found Collins for a score with 1:42 left, making it 6-1 at the break.

Lycoming added the first goal in the second half, scoring with 8:31 left in the third as Thompson found junior Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) for a score. Lebanon Valley cut the gap to 7-4 early in the fourth, but Lycoming's defense held firm from there and an illegal body check led to a man-up situation late, which senior Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West) capitalized on to make up the final margin.

Huff finished with a goal, an assist and four ground balls and junior Cole Masterson (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) added four ground balls and two ground balls.

Kevin Beaver led the Dutchmen with two goals and an assist and Josh Croyle also added two goals. Coleman Wagner caused five turnovers and Blake Weaver picked up four ground balls. Cameron Epple stopped nine shots in goal.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 4, when they head to Alvernia University for a 4 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game.
