James double-double leads Warriors past Lions

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Darius James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds to highlight six players in double-figures to lead the Lycoming College men's basketball team to a 99-86 victory over Penn State Schuylkill in the first game of the Dutch Burch Tip-Off Tournament on Friday evening, Nov. 9, at Lamade Gym.
 
The Warriors (1-0 overall) are now 19-1 in Dutch Burch Tip-Off openers and head to their 11th-straight championship game, where they will face Marywood on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 10, for a 3 p.m. start. Marywood outlasted New Rochelle, 89-84, in the nightcap of the first day of tournament play.
 
James finished 9-of-13 from the field and had a game-high three steals. In their first-career collegiate action, freshman D'Andre Edmond (Pfugerville, Texas/Pfugerville) and Markanthony Fidelis (Largo, Md./DeMatha Catholic) scored in double figures, with Edmond finishing with 12 points and Fidelis with 11. Sophomore D'Yante Doughty (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) had 18 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, helping to ice the game. Sophomore Darius Dangerfield (Abingdon, Md./Harford Tech) had a game-high eight assists while scoring 14 of the 32 Warrior bench points. Senior Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) scored all ten of his points in the second half, including two three-point baskets, and his eight rebounds give him 256 in his career.
 
The Warriors ended the opening period tied with the Lions (0-1 overall), 39-39, as the teams fought through six ties and seven lead changes in the first half.
 
After a back-and-fourth start to the second half, Penn State Schuylkill held a 75-74 lead with 4:53 left. Lycoming went on the largest run of the night, sparked by a deep 3-point basket by Chandler, followed by a fast-break dunk by James, as the team closed the game on a 25-11 spurt. They eventually grew the lead to 17, the largest of the night, after a pair of free throws from James with 10 seconds left.
 
The Warriors shot 49 percent from the field and outscored the Lions, 42-32, in the paint.
 
The Lions were led by Khari Thompson, who finished the game with 22 points and nine rebounds. William Santiago had 18 points, canning five 3-pointers, and Justin Alverez posted 16 points and five rebounds. Lamonttea Brown posted five assists.
