SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Sophomore
D'Yante Doughty (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) scored a career-high 32 points and sparked two comebacks to cut into 20-point deficits, but Susquehanna University had the answer each time in an 80-68 non-conference win on Tuesday night, Nov. 20, at the O.W. Houts Gymnasium.
Â
The loss was the Warriors' first of the season after starting the year with three straight wins for the fourth straight year, falling to 3-1.
Â
The River Hawks (2-3 overall) used a 14-3 run midway through the first period lead to 34-14. Senior
Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) knocked down a 3-pointer and then had a block that led to a three by Doughty to spark a 15-3 run, cutting the lead to 37-29 heading into the break. The Warriors went 5-of-5 from the field on the run, led 10 straight points from Doughty.
Â
Doughty started the second half with a jumper, followed by two made free throws by sophomore
Darius Dangerfield (Abingdon, Md./Harford Tech), as the Warriors closed the gap to 37-33. That was the closest they could get, as Susquehanna used a 31-11 run to build the lead to 72-48 with 5:17 left.
Â
Lycoming countered with one more run of their own, closing the game out by outscoring Susquehanna, 20-8, cutting the lead to seven with 50 seconds remaining after a layup by Doughty, but Susquehanna closed the game with six of the last seven points.
Â
Doughty scored his 32 points while going 10-of-14 from the field and 5-of-9 from three. Senior
Darius James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) had a near double-double, finishing with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Dangerfield added eight points while going a perfect 4-of-4 from the line and Chandler had six rebounds with two blocks. Senior
Hiro Yamaki (Sakata, Japan/Sakata East) had a season-high four points, all during the late run in the second period.
Â
Seth Callahan led the Riverhawks with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Bryce Butler and Zach Knecht dropped in twelve points apiece and Dominic Dunn added 11 off the bench.
Â
The Warriors get back on the court after Thanksgiving break, on Monday, Nov. 26, for a 6 p.m. start against crosstown rival Penn College at Bardo Gymnasium.
