Hot shooting leads Warriors past Wildcats

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Four starters scored in double figures, led by 23 points from sophomore D'Yante Doughty (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), as the Lycoming College men's basketball team defeated crosstown rival Penn College, 89-75, in non-conference action on Monday, Nov. 26, at Bardo Gymnasium.

The Warriors (4-1 overall) shot 61 percent (37-of-61) from the floor and were able to get in transition often, outscoring the Wildcats (0-5 overall) 26-9 off turnovers. Penn College shot 52 percent (30-of-58) from the floor.

Doughty, the reigning MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week, went 8-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-5 at the line. Senior Darius James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Darius Dangerfield (Abingdon, Md./Harford Tech) had another hot night from three, hitting 4-of-6 shots from deep, dropping in 18 points. Freshman Markanthony Fidelis (Largo, Md./Dematha Catholic) added 15 points and fellow freshman D'Andre Edmond (Pflugerville, Texas/ Pflugerville) finished with six points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting with five rebounds.

After a back-and-forth beginning to the first half that saw three ties and four lead changes, Lycoming tied the game, 33-33, off a Fidelis jumper with 5:26 remaining in the half. A pair of baskets in the paint by James and a three from senior Jordan Logan (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area), sparked a 12-2 run to give the Warriors a 47-37 lead heading into the break.

Doughty shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range to lead all scorers in the first half with 15 points.

A three from Fidelis gave the Warriors a 13-point lead, 57-44, just three minutes into the second period. However, the Wildcats used a 12-0 run to cut the lead to one, 57-56, with 13:54 remaining. From there, it was a seesaw battle, with a Penn College tip-in layup tying the game at 70 with 5:48 left. The Warriors closed out the contest by outscoring the Wildcats, 19-5, though, sparked by two highlight-reel dunks by James to put the game away.

Ryan Lockman led the Wildcats with a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Bartron Spencer had 15 points and Williamsport native Ben Sosa finished with 11.

The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday night, Nov. 28, when they open up MAC Commonwealth conference play by hosting Albright at 6 p.m. in Lamade Gymnasium.
