Warriors sweep at Pa./N.Y. Duals

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Using big bonus-point wins in the first match and splitting the eight contested bouts in the second helped the Lycoming College wrestling team to a pair of wins at the Pa./N.Y. Duals at King's College on Saturday, Jan. 6, downing RIT, 20-18, and Oswego, 24-16.

A run of 15 points in the final four matches helped lift Lycoming (7-2 overall) to a narrow 20-18 win over RIT (3-4 overall) in the meet's opening match, as ninth-ranked junior Garrett Wesneski (Canton, Pa./Canton Area) provided an undramatic 17-0 second-period technical fall to seal the win.

Wesneski's win over Morris at the 3:35 mark of the match sealed a Warrior comeback from down 15-5 after the first six bouts. Eighth-ranked senior Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area), who is now 99-41 in his career, started the comeback with an 11-3 major decision over RIT's Joe Lupisella at 174 to make it 15-9. After an RIT decision at 184 make it 18-9, sophomore Travis Ogden (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area), wrestling for the first time since November, provided a pin of Joe Monteleone to make it 18-15, setting up Wesneski's meet-clinching win.

The Warriors' lone win in the first six bouts came from 10th-ranked junior Trevor Corl (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte Area) at 149 pounds, as he notched an 18-0 technical fall of Zarek Thomas.

In the second meet, the Warriors split the eight contested bouts before getting pushed over the edge in the 24-16 win over Oswego (2-2 overall) with a pair of forfeits at 197 and 285 pounds.

After Oswego jumped out to a 7-0 lead, the Warriors got on the board with freshman Ethan Landis (Canton, Pa./Canton) posting a 5-3 win over Justin DeLucia at 141 pounds, starting a run of three straight decisions, as Corl posted a 3-0 win over Rocco Russo at 149 and sophomore Hadyn Swartwood (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) added a 4-2 win over Joey Bush at 157, giving Lycoming a 9-7 lead. After Oswego posted a pin at 174 to take a 13-9 lead, Conrad notched a 2-0 win over Troy Seymour, listed as honorable mention in d3wrestle.com's individual rankings. Oswego won the next match in overtime to get a 16-12 lead, but the forfeit wins in the final two bouts sealed it for Lycoming.

The Warriors get back on the mat on Friday, Jan. 12, when they begin the two-day Budd Whitehill National Duals in Lamade Gym. The 16-team event will kick off at 9 a.m.
