Warriors wrap up record-breaking season

Box Score ANNVILLE, Pa. – After winning a school-record 13 matches, the fourth-seeded Lycoming College women's tennis team bowed out of the MAC Commonwealth Championship semifinals, falling to top-seeded Lebanon Valley, 5-1, at the Shankroff Tennis Center on Wednesday, May 3.
The Warriors finished the 2016-17 season with a 13-6 record, besting the school record of 12 wins set in 1998, while Lebanon Valley improved to 14-4 overall and advanced to the conference championship match on Saturday, May 6, where they will face Messiah.

Freshmen Hannah Summerson (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) and Julia Nagle (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) won their 15th match of the year, winning six straight games in an 8-2 win over Alyssa Potosnak and Megan Williams. The win helped the duo improve to 15-6 on the year, three wins more than any other doubles team in program history.

Lebanon Valley claimed a win at No. 3 doubles soon after and took the lead with a narrow, 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles. Marla Scacchitti and Becky Pierpont held serve in the 16th game of the pro-set after there were four straight breaks in the match with senior Sophie Herzing (St. Mary's, Pa./Elk County Catholic) and junior Kaitlin Hallabuk (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area).

In singles play, Lebanon Valley was able to finish off the match, winning at No. 2, 3 and 5.

Summerson, who tied the school record with 14 singles wins, was leading in her match, 5-4 in the first set with Scacchitti when the clinching match was won, leaving her tied with Cricket Temple's total of 14 wins from 1999 and 2000.

Summerson finished the year holding the Lycoming records for singles (14), doubles (15) and combined wins (29) in a year, as she broke Temple's record of 24 combined wins set in 2001 and along with teammate Nagle, she broke the mark of 12 doubles wins set by Jamie Kaiser in 1998.

Hallabuk and Nagle each won 12 singles matches, leaving them tied for fourth in school history, as they had identical 12-8 overall records. Senior Mariah Durrant (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) also won 10 singles matches, good for 15th in the school record book.

Nagle and Hallabuk also chart high on the school's single-season combined wins list, with Nagle's 27 combined wins second behind only Summerson and Hallabuk's 20 (12 singles and eight doubles) in ninth in program history.
