Warriors sweep Wilkes for seventh straight win

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) had five hits and the Lycoming College softball team completed come-from-behind wins in both ends of a doubleheader at Wilkes University, winning the first 3-2 in eight innings and the second, 4-3, on a gorgeous Sunday, April 9, at the Ralston Athletic Complex, running the team's winning streak to seven games.

Kline finished the doubleheader 5-for-8 with a homer, a double and two RBI, as she extended her school-record hitting streak to 20 games.

In the first game, Kline tied it at two with a  seventh-inning homer before Lycoming (14-6 overall) complete the comeback win in the eighth, posting a 3-2 win.

Junior Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) (8-4) continued her torrid pitching, allowing just three hits and an earned run in her fourth straight win. She struck out four and walked two in the eight-inning complete game.

Wilkes got on the board in the second with a single run before Lycoming tied it in the fourth. Senior Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) led off with a single to right field. After a sac bunt, junior Ashley Schoendstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) singled through the left side and freshman Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) walked to load the bases before sophomore Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) delivered a sac fly.

In the sixth, Wilkes dragged across an unearned run on a double by Celine Podlesney, but Lycoming answered when Kline hit her first career bomb in the seventh to insure extra innings. Shady started the eighth at second base. Kunes reached on a fielder's choice and Shady reached third before senior Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg) lifted a sac fly to center field to bring in Shady with the winning run.

In the bottom of the inning, the Warriors' defense saved the game, as the Colonels (14-8 overall) put runners on second and third with one out. A grounder came to Klines at third base and she fired home to put the Wilkes' runner in a rundown. Crabb fired to shortstop Kline covering third to get the tag and second out before a grounder ended the game.

Kline went 2-for-4 with a homer and Schoenstadt went 2-for-4 with a triple in the game. Podlesny's double highlighted Wilkes' game offensively.

Podlesny (6-4) took the loss, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in eight innings. She walked two and struck out one.

In the second game, Lycoming scored single runs in the third and fifth to overcome a one-run deficit in a 4-3 win before sophomore Cayla Treaster (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) posted her first career save.

Down 3-2, the Warriors rallied to tie the game in the top of the third when Shady doubled to right center to lead off. She took third on a passed ball with one out and scored on a single to center field by Crabb.

In the fifth, Crabb led off with a walk before Schoenstadt reached on a fielder's choice. Schoenstadt stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Duda.

Meanwhile, after a three-run third by the Colonels, freshman Hannah Boop (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) allowed just two more runners to reach second base, retiring 11 of the last 12 batters she faced. In the seventh, Treaster earned the save by getting three flyouts around a lone single.

The Warriors scored their first two run in the second when Schoenstadt reached on a fielder's choice and scored when sophomore Lexie Kovin (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) singled to center field with two outs. Junior Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) singled through the left side to move Kovin to third before Kline drove her in with a single to center field.

Kline went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI and Shady went 2-for-3 with a run and double. Crabb went 2-for-2 with a RBI and a hit by pitch and Schoenstadt added two runs.

Kaliyah Moore led the Colonels, who posted eight hits, with two hits and a RBI.

Boop (3-2) earned the win, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in six innings. She struck out one. Podlesney (6-5) took the loss in relief, allowing four hits and a run in four innings. She walked two and struck out one.

The Warriors get back in action on Tuesday, April 11, when they head to King's (Pa.) for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
