WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A first-inning grand slam by senior
Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) and a pair of doubles by junior
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) helped the Lycoming College softball team to a 9-1 five-inning win over crosstown rival Penn College at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Wednesday, April 5.
Â
Freshman
Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, moving within a game of the school record for longest hitting streak, held by Amy Long (1996) and Holly Lansberry (2012) at 17 games. She also extended her streak of consecutive hits to six, tied for the 23
rd-longest in Division III history.
Â
Shady finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run and three RBI, including her third-straight game-ending hit with a fifth-inning two-run double that gave Lycoming the run-rule win. Kunes went 2-for-3 with the grand slam, her seventh career homer to tie for third in program history, and a career-high five RBI.
Â
The Warriors (10-6 overall) got started early in the first inning, as Kline blooped a single into center field before freshman
Madison Brown (McElhatten, Pa./Central Mountain) and Shady was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kunes followed with the grand slam, lofting a high fly just inside the left field foul pole.
Â
Lycoming tacked on two more runs in the second, as junior
Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) led off with a walk before Kline singled to center. After a fielder's choice, Shady drilled a line drive double over the left fielder's head and Kunes followed with a single through the left side to drive in another run.
Â
The Warriors rallied to end the game in the fifth inning, with junior
Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) leading off with a single to right field in front of a diving outfielder. Fischer followed by driving a single through the left side and Kline drove a single into right field to score Duda. Brown followed with a single to right field to load the bases and Shady ended the game with a double that one-hopped the left field fence for two RBIs.
Â
Penn College scored its lone run in the fourth inning, with Kiersten Shreiner leading off with a walk before a pair of singles helped her score.
Â
Brown finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, as the first four batters in the Lycoming lineup went 9-for-12 with seven runs and all nine RBIs.
Â
Shady (6-4) earned the win in the circle, allowing three hits and one run in five innings. She walked two and struck out one. Amanda Kustenbauter (1-4) took the loss, allowing six hits, four walks and six runs in two innings.
