Kunes reaches records at Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Senior Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) tied single-season school records for RBI (30) and total bases (65) to lead the Lycoming College softball team on Sunday, April 23, but Arcadia University took a pair of one-run games, 2-1 and 6-5 in 10 innings, in MAC Commonwealth action at Blankley Field.

Kunes tied the RBI record with a single down the right field line in the sixth inning of the first game of the doubleheader, tying the single-season record of 30 set by Susan Leuthner in 1996. She tied her own record of 65 total bases (also held by Jeanine Evans, 1999) with a single to left in the eighth inning of the second game.

The Warriors (18-14 overall, 5-9 MAC Commonwealth) were led by junior Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) in the doubleheader, as she went 4-for-7 with a run, a double and three RBI.

In the second game, Lycoming scored in the 10th inning, but Arcadia (20-10 overall, 8-6 MAC Commonwealth) scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to walk off with a 6-5 win.

The Warriors scored in the top of the 10th, with junior Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) starting the inning at second base due to the international tiebreaker. She took second on a sac bunt by freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) before scoring on a single up the middle by sophomore Cayla Treaster (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville).

In the bottom of the inning, Arcadia tied the game when a sac bunt led to a throwing error that moved the batter to third. N Iasello then lined a single over the left fielder's head to score the winning run.

Lycoming took a two-run lead in the fourth inning, as freshman Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) singled with one out before junior Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) walked. After a wild pitch moved them up a base, Schoenstadt delivered a two-RBI single up the middle.

The Knights used an error and two hits in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, but Lycoming responded in the sixth with two runs. Brown led off by being hit by a pitch before a sac bunt moved her into scoring position. With two outs, Schoenstadt delivered a double to left center and senior Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg) followed with a double down the left field line to make it 4-2.

Arcadia had single runs in the sixth and seventh to tie the game and had runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth, but sophomore Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) was able to work out of both jams with flyouts.

Brown went 1-for-3 with two runs and Schoenstadt led Lycoming by going 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Jackie Bilotti and Kristin Cancellierre each had two hits and run and Tori Zangrilli finished 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Julia Gessner also had two hit a run and RBI.

Kylee Schwind (10-6) earned the win with one inning of relief. Nace (4-3) took the loss, allowing 11 hits, one earned run and two walks in nine innings of work for Lycoming.

In the first game, both teams combined for just seven hits, with Arcadia's three being good enough to get two first-inning runs to hold on for a 2-1 win.

Scwind tossed a four-hitter to get the win for the Knights, as she walked one, allowed a run and struck out seven in the win.

Shady (10-8) was nearly her equal, allowing three hits and five walks while striking out seven in the complete game win.

Arcadia used a walk and two hits to score its first-inning runs, with Mary Pat Murray posting a two-RBI single up the middle.

Lycoming had a runner reach third in the fourth with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning. The team rallied in the sixth, though, as Brown delivered a single down the left field line with one out. After a flyout, Brown scored on a single down the right field line by Kunes. Schoenstadt reached on an error to put two runners on with two outs, but Schwind used another strikeout to end the inning.

Amanda Hess led the Knights, going 2-for-3 with a run.

The Warriors get back on the field on Thursday, April 27, when they host Elmira at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
