Warriors break records in sweep of Soaring Eagles

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) broke the school record for single-season total bases, senior Morgan Kunes (Beech Cree, Pa./Central Mountain) broke the record for single-season RBIs and the Lycoming College softball team reached 20 wins for the second straight year for the first time since 1997, as Lycoming's bats pounded out 24 hits combined in 9-2 and 5-0 wins over Elmira College in non-conference action at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Thursday, April 27.

Kline, who entered the games two bases shy of the school record of 65 total bases, surpassed it with a first-inning homer in the first game and added eight more during a 5-for-7 day in which she homered twice, doubled, scored three runs and drove in four.

Kline's 75 total bases are eight more than Kunes, who entered the doubleheader tied for the school-record of 65 total bases. She had two base hits in the first game, the first of which scored junior Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) from second base for her 31st RBI of the season, passing the school record of 30 set by Susan Leuthner in 1996.

The Warriors (20-14 overall), meanwhile, claimed their 20th win of the season with the sweep, the first time since a three-year run from 1995-97 when the team has posted back-to-back 20-win seasons after finishing 20-19 in 2016.

In the first game, the Warriors pounded out 15 hits, led by two homers and a double from Kline, while junior Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) tossed a complete-game two-hitter to lead the team to a 9-2 win.

The Warriors responded quickly in the first inning after a two-run homer from Emily Clark helped Elmira (10-13 overall) take a 2-0 lead. Shady led off the Warriors' first at bat with a double into left field before sophomore Cayla Treaster (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) delivered another RBI double into the left center field gap. Kline followed with a two-run blast to center field to give Lycoming a 3-2 lead.

Schoenstadt followed with a walk, moved to second on a groundout, took third on a wild pitch and scored on another grounder for the team's fourth run of the inning.

In the second inning, Shady and Treaster each had one-out hits before a fielder's choice set up Schoenstadt, who delivered a RBI single into right field. Lycoming added three more runs in the fourth, as Kline launched her second homer of the game with one out before Schoenstadt reached on an error, stole second and scored on Kunes' record-breaking before she came around to score on a throwing error from second to make it 8-2.

Lycoming tacked on one more run in the sixth, as Kunes singled to center to lead off, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single to right by pinch-hitting sophomore Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge).

Shady, meanwhile, shut down the Eagles after the first-inning homer, retiring 14 in a row before a sixth-inning walk. She allowed one more hit in the seventh, but got a groundball double play to end the game. Shady improved to 11-8 on the season with the win, as she struck out six and walked four in the win.

Emily Carlin (5-7) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing 15 hits, eight earned runs and two walks. She struck out two.

Kline went 3-for-4 in the contest with a school-record tying two homers, a double, two runs and three RBI to lead Lycoming. Treaster went 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and RBI, Shady went 2-for-4 with a double and run, Kunes went 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI and senior Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg) went 2-for-4 with a RBI for Lycoming, as eight of the team's nine starters had at least one hit in the game.

In the second game, Nace tossed a four-hit shutout for her second of the campaign, as Lycoming's offense jumped out with two first-inning runs and never looked back in a 5-0 win.

Nace (5-3) allowed six baserunners in the game and left two stranded at third base, as she walked just one and tossed 82 pitches in the shutout.

The Warriors jumped out with two runs in the first inning, as Shady delivered a double to left center to start the game. After a popup, Kline delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Shady. Kline stole second and scored on another single up the middle by Schoenstadt.

In the second, Lycoming scratched another run across, as junior Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) walked to lead off, took second on a sac bunt by Nace and scored on a single up the middle by junior Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport).

Elmira got the tying run on base in the sixth, with a hit and an error, but Kline made a leaping grab of a liner that started a double play and then after a hit and a walk loaded the bases, she ranged to her right to get to a hard-hit grounder before forcing a runner at third to end the inning.

In the sixth, Lycoming added two more runs, with Duda hitting a two-out single before Nace singled into left field. Fischer drove her in with a single just out of the second baseman's reach and Shady delivered a single just out of the shortstop's reach to drive in the first two runners.

Shady went 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI, Fischer went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Kline went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI to lead the Warriors. Carlin went 2-for-3 for the Eagles.

Katie McDougal (5-6) allowed nine hits and five runs in the complete game for Elmira. She walked one and struck out one.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, April 29, when they host Widener University in the MAC Commonwealth finale at 1 p.m., with Lycoming needing to sweep the doubleheader and get some help to reach the MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament for the first time since 2011.
