WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Senior
Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) became the 12
th player in school history to reach 100 career hits and the third to post 25 career doubles for the Lycoming College softball team, as Lycoming won the second game of a doubleheader, 6-3, against MAC Freedom power King's College after King's snapped Lycoming's seven-game win streak in the first game, 11-7, on Tuesday, April 11, at Betzler Field.
The Warriors (15-7 overall) were led in the doubleheader by freshman
Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain), who went 6-for-8 with a run and five RBI. Freshman
Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) extended her hitting streak to a school-record 22 games, posting a single to left with two outs in the seventh in game one before knocking a double to start the second game.
Kunes reached the mark with two hits in the first game, doubling down the left field line for her 99
th hit in the third inning before reaching the century mark with a single to right field in the sixth.
Lycoming jumped out with three runs in the first inning of the second game, as it finished with nine hits in a 6-3 win over the Monarchs (12-10 overall).
After Kline's leadoff double, Brown reached with a single down the right field line before she stole second. Junior
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) walked to load the bases before a groundout double play threatened to end the inning. However, senior
Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg) reached on a fielder's choice that didn't yield an out to drive in Brown and junior
Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) capped the rally with a bases-clearing triple to left-center.
Lycoming tacked on another run in the fourth, with Kline reaching second on an error with two outs before scoring on a single to right by Brown. King's fought back with two runs in the bottom of the inning, one earned, while using three singles to score the runs.
Junior
Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) hit an infield single to start the sixth before Kline reached on an error to put runners on the corners. After Kline stole second, Brown singled through the left side to score two runs.
King's mounted one last rally in the seventh thanks to an RBI single by Amber Saylor, but a pair of popouts ended the threat.
Brown finished 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI and Shady went 2-for-3 with a run. Kline scored two runs and Schoenstadt drove in two.
Saylor led the Monarchs, going 3-for-4 with a RBI and Ally DeVoir went 1-for-2 with a double and a RBI.
Sophomore
Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) improved to 3-0 for Lycoming, allowing eight hits, two walks and two earned runs in the complete game. She struck out five. Kristina Kocher (5-4) took the loss, allowing four hits, three earned runs and three walks in 2 2/3 innings. She struck out two.
In the first game, the Warriors enjoyed two two-run leads in the game, but the Monarchs responded both times to post an 11-7 win to snap Lycoming's seven-game winning streak.
Brown led the team, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and Kunes went 2-for-3 with a run with a double. Schoenstadt also went 2-for-4 with a run and a double.
The Warriors started the scoring with a pair of runs in the third inning. Shady was hit by a pitch with two outs before Kunes doubled down the left field line to drive her in. Crabb followed with an infield single and an error allowed Kunes to score.
King's responded with five runs, three unearned, in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead but Lycoming rallied with a run in the fourth. Freshman
Darci Warriner (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) led off with a walk, moved to third on an error and after a pair of outs, Brown singled her in from left. The Warriors took a 7-5 lead in the fifth. Crabb walked with one out in the fifth before Schoenstadt delivered a double to left center. Freshman
Hannah Boop (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) followed with a walk to load the bases before sophomore
Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) doubled to right field to drive in both runners. Fischer followed with a sac fly and after a walk, Brown singled to center to score Duda.
King's answered with two runs to tie the game in the fifth and added four more, two unearned, in the sixth to earn the win.
Rachel DeTore led King's, going 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and three RBI and Megan Beaupre went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs.
Kocher earned the win in relief for the Monarchs, as she allowed one hit and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings. Boop (3-3) took the loss, allowing four hits, a walk and four earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. She struck out four.
The Warriors get back in action on Thursday, April 13, when they host Lebanon Valley in a 3 p.m. MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
