Warriors sweep on second day in Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) tossed five innings, allowing one earned run, and added four hits and four runs at the plate while senior Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) posted four hits and three doubles to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a sweep on its second day at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex, beating Albertus Magnus, 10-2 in six innings, and Keystone, 9-3, on Tuesday, March 14.

The Warriors (4-0 overall) pounded out 20 hits to score 19 runs over the two games, with Kunes leading the way, as she became the fifth player in school history to reach 20 career doubles in the win over Albertus Magnus (1-2 overall) and she finished the day with 22, which is fourth in program history.

Five Warriors finished with at least two hits, led by three, including two doubles from senior Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) as Lycoming was able to score at least two runs in four innings to post a 10-2, six-inning win over Albertus Magnus.

The Warriors jumped out on Albertus Magnus in the first inning with three runs, as both sophomore Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) and freshman Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) reached by getting hit by a pitch, setting up cleanup hitter Kunes, who delivered a two-RBI double into right center. Shady followed with a single before walks from senior Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg) and freshman Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) brought in Kunes.

After Albertus Magnus drew within a run at 3-2 with single runs in the second and third innings, the Warriors got the runs back in the fourth when junior Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) delivered a single into shallow right with the bases loaded that brought in both Shady, who reached on an infield single and Crabb, who walked.

In the fourth, the Warriors broke open the game, scoring three runs on four hits and an error, with both Warriner and Fischer notching RBI singles in the frame. In the sixth, the team rallied with two outs and a double to the left-center field gap by freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) brought in Schoenstadt and Brown to ensure the mercy-rule win.

Brown finished 2-for-4 with two runs, Kline went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, Shady went 2-for-3 with two runs and Fischer went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Crabb also scored twice and Warriner had two RBI.

Amanda Jessey led the Falcons, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Shady (2-0) earned the win, as she allowed six hits and one earned run in five innings of work. She struck out two. Shyleen Ortiz (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs, two hits and two walks in one inning of work.

After a rocky start that included giving up three runs in the first inning, freshman Hannah Boop (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) retired 20 of the last 21 batters she faced and a six-run fourth inning helped lift Lycoming to a 9-3 win over Keystone in the second game of the day.

The Warriors rallied to tie the game at three with a single run in the first inning, as Brown scored off a wild pitch after walking, and two runs in the third inning, thanks to back-to-back doubles from Kunes and Shady to start the inning. Shady scored on a groundout later in the frame.

Lycoming broke the game open in the fourth, as Fischer walked before Schoenstadt laid down a bunt single and Brown walked to load the bases. Kline delivered a two-RBI single to break the tie. After a fielder's choice, Shady sent an RBI single through the right side and Crabb sent a two-RBI double to left field. Crabb scored on an error to make it 9-3.

Kunes finished 2-for-4 with two runs and a double and Shady went 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs and two RBI for the Warriors. Antonette Scialpi led the Giants (1-2 overall) with a  single and two RBI.

After giving up two walks and two singles in the three-run first inning, Boop (1-0) settled in to earn her first career win, striking out three and getting 12 ground ball outs while throwing 83 pitches in the complete game.

Alyssa Hughes (0-2) took the loss for the Giants, as she allowed four hits, six walks and five runs in three innings.

The Warriors continue their trip in Myrtle Beach on Wednesday, March 15, facing off with Rutgers-Camden at 11:30 and Mount Saint Vincent at 1:30 p.m.
