NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) came within one out of a shutout and freshman
Hannah Boop (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) tossed a four-hit shutout, as the Lycoming College softball team posted a 6-3 win over Rutgers-Camden and a 3-0 win over Mount Saint Vincent on a blustery Wednesday, March 15 at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
Â
The heart of Lycoming's lineup went 6-for-10 with four runs and two RBI, producing more than enough offense in a 6-3 win over Rutgers-Camden, as Shady tossed a complete-game seven hitter.
Â
The Warriors got on the board in the first inning, as freshman
Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) walked with one out and after a fielder's choice, senior
Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) drove in freshman
Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) from first with a two-out double in the gap. Lycoming tacked in a run in the fifth inning, as Kline singled through the left side with two outs before Kunes walked, setting up an RBI single up the middle by Shady.
Â
The Warriors broke open the game in the sixth inning with two runs, as sophomore
Alexis Kovin (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) led off with a walk. After a sac bunt, junior
Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) delivered an RBI single to right center. She moved up on a wild pitch and after a lineout, she scored on a two-out single from Brown.
Â
Lycoming took a 6-0 lead in the seventh with two more runs, as Kunes and Shady singled before senior
Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg) singled to left and freshman
Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) brought in Shady after reaching on an error.
Â
Shady, meanwhile, didn't allow a runner past second base in the first six innings before the Scarlet Raptors rallied with five hits and scored three runs with two outs in the seventh. She ended the rally, though, with her sixth strikeout of the game.
Â
Kline went 2-for-4 with two runs, Kunes went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and RBI and Shady went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI for the Warriors in the 3-4-5 spots in the order. Allie Jenkins led the Raptors, going 2-for-4 with a RBI.
Â
Shady (3-0) allowed seven hits and three runs in the game. She walked three and struck out six. Jessica Thompson (2-3) threw a complete game for Rutgers-Camden, allowing 10 hits, five earned runs and five walks. She struck out eight.
Â
Facing off against three-time All-Skyline Conference pitcher Mackenzie Heizer in the second game, Boop was outstanding, allowing four hits and striking out five in a 3-0 win over Mount Saint Vincent.
Â
Boop (2-0) allowed just one runner to reach third base in the game and she allowed just six runners in the game, retiring eight straight between the third and fifth innings.
Â
Heizer (1-1) was just as impressive, allowing just three hits and striking out 11, but Lycoming was able to strike opportunely, scoring three unearned runs in the win.
Â
In the second inning, Kunes reached on a walk, took second on a passed ball and scored on an outfield error. In the third inning, Brown had a two out single down the left field line before Kline delivered a single into center field that got past the outfielder and rolled to wall, allowing both Brown and Kline to circle the bases.
Â
Alanna Alioto-Reyes went 2-for-3 to lead the Dolphins.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Thursday, March 16, when they face Division II Mansfield University in a doubleheader starting at 9:30 a.m. at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
