Huff gives Warriors overtime win at King’s

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) scored with 1:37 left in the first overtime and sophomore Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) put together a spectacular 18-save performance to lift the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team to its first win over King's College in five years, 10-9, at McCarthy Stadium on Sunday, March 12.

Huff's goal came on the Warriors' only shot of the overtime period, as he took a pass and was able to step into a gap before pulling the trigger for the score off the inside pipe and into the net, helping to spoil a fourth-quarter Monarch rally, where they overcame an 8-6 deficit with eight minutes left.

The Warriors (2-2 overall) were able to force a turnover just 50 seconds into the overtime period and cleared the ball quickly. However, it took a minute for the team's offense to open up and allow Huff to see the golden goal for its first win over the Monarchs (1-3 overall) since an 8-7 win in 2011.

The Warriors put forth a tremendous defensive effort in the game, seeing 53 Monarch shots, and withstanding a five-goal effort in the fourth quarter. After tying the game at nine with 2:46 left, the Monarchs also had two possessions to take the lead, but Tenant made three saves to thwart the rally, the last with Tenant stuffing a point blank shot from Michael Paniccia tried to go between his legs with 30 seconds remaining.

Both freshman Richie Hurley (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and sophomore Andrew Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) paced the offense with four goals a piece, while freshman Tyler Thompson (Nepean, Ontario/Mother Teresa) added a goal and three assists and Huff finished with a goal and two assists for the Warriors.

Down 4-2 early in the third quarter, the Warriors rallied with the last four goals of the quarter, scoring an efficient three times in four opportunities on the power play. Huff found Hurley for the first goal before he found Thompson for the score to tie the game with 10:25 left. The Warriors took the lead on a pass from freshman Nick George (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) to Hurley with 2:07 left and Hurley added another score with 42 seconds left without a man advantage to make it 6-4.

The two teams alternated two goals apiece in the first seven minutes of the final quarter before King's tied the game at eight with a score from Brock Johnson with 6:35 left. The Warriors answered, as Thompson found Ream with 5:05 left, but King's tied it one more time with 2:46 left off a score from Shawn Dickey, setting up the dramatic end.

The Warriors showed sparks on offense in the first quarter, scoring twice in a 30-second span to take a 2-1 lead with 4:03 left, with one goal coming from Hurley and one from Ream. The Monarchs responded with the next two goals, taking a 3-2 lead into the break. Tenant weathered the storm in the half, making 10 saves while the Monarchs fired 30 of its 53 shots in the half.

Brian Steiger led the Monarchs with three goals and three assists. Shawn Dickey had a goal, an assist and eight ground balls, and Nick Foley won 14-of-22 faceoffs.

Freshman Sam Pollock (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) led the Warriors with four ground balls and sophomore Austin Arroyo (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) scooped up three. Sophomore Eric Schutta (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) caused two turnovers and George won 4-of-7 in the faceoff circle.

The Warriors get back in action on Wednesday, March 15, when they head to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 2 p.m. non-conference game.
