WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) made 16 saves for the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team, but in the final 10 seconds, it was a caused turnover just outside the crease by freshman
Sam Pollock (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) that preserved Lycoming's 7-6 victory over 2016 Colonial States Athletic Conference runner-up Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 25, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
Â
Gwynedd Mercy (0-1 overall) stormed back from a 7-3 fourth quarter deficit to make it a one-goal game with 3:16 left. The Warriors (1-1 overall) had cleared the ball, with 2:14 left, but as the clock rolled under a minute, a 30-second warning was issued and Lycoming didn't get a shot off. With the ball as the clock rolled under 10 seconds, a Gwynedd Mercy player turned in traffic and was handcuffed by Pollock and sophomore
Collin Bitsko (Farmingdale, Pa./Freehold Township) scooped up the ball as time expired, giving Lycoming its second straight win over the Griffins.
Â
"The guys found a way to win the game," head coach
Chris Scanlon said. "We made some adjustments at halftime that bailed us out. We played much tighter defense, even though they made that run in the fourth quarter. It's a game of runs, and I thought our guys did a good job scrapping to find a way to win."
Â
Sophomore
Andrew Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) led the Warriors offensively with three goals and two assists and freshman
Richie Hurley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) added a goal and two assists. Freshman
Tyler Thompson (Napean, Ontario/Mother Teresa) also added a goal and an assist.
Â
The Warriors gave up the opening goal in the first quarter, but responded with three goals in the final 6:42, with Ream, Hurley and freshman
Drew Collins (Victor, N.Y./Victor) all denting the twine. The Griffins closed within a goal in the second quarter, but Ream answered with a laser beam of a shot with 6:18 left to give Lycoming a 4-2 lead at the break.
Â
Lycoming continued its run in the third quarter, with senior
Peter Pluta (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Thompson finding the net in the first five minutes before a Gwynedd Mercy goal sent the game into the fourth quarter at 6-3.
Â
Hurley found Ream for a score with 10:13 left in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-3 before the Griffins made their comeback. With the score 7-5, it appeared the Warriors had another goal off a pretty dive inside by Ream, but he was ruled in the crease, setting up the dramatic end.
Â
Junior
Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) led the team with three ground balls and a caused turnover and Ream also added three ground balls. Five others had two ground balls and six players caused a turnover.
Â
Ryan Simpson led the Griffins with two goals, an assist and six ground balls and Joe Simpson also posted six ground balls. Kohler Setley added two assists.
Â
Sean Myers finished with three saves for the Griffins, while Tenant finished with 16 stops, eight in each half.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, March 1, when they host fourth-ranked Ithaca at 3:30 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
