th-ranked Lycoming College men's basketball team made plays – as
Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) drew a huge charge that negated a layup and
Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) had six points in the closing drive to help Lycoming hold off the late rally from Alvernia, 73-62, in MAC Commonwealth action on Wednesday evening, Dec. 6, at Jack McCloskey Court.
Wallace led Lycoming (8-0 overall, 3-0 MAC Commonwealth) with 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Newbold added 12 points and six rebounds.
After leading by double-digits for much of the first half and increasing that lead to 17 points midway through the second half, Alvernia (2-5 overall, 0-3 MAC Commonwealth) was able that cut that deficit down to five twice in the final four minutes. The Warriors led 63-50 with just over seven minutes remaining but in the next three minutes, the Golden Wolves went on a 10-2 run. That's when Wallace came up big as in the final 3:08, the 6-4 forward accounted for six points, four rebounds, a steal and a block. He ended an 8-0 Alvernia run with a steal and layup and helped the Warriors regain a double-digit lead late.
The Warriors jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first four minutes. The lead grew to 15 with nine minutes remaining in the first half when junior
T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) hit a 3-pointer to make it 29-14. The Golden Wolves climbed back within six points, albeit for 10 seconds, as the Warriors closed the opening half on a 6-0 run on a 3-pointer from Newbold and free throws from sophomore
Damani Myers (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Mary's) and Duckett.
Junior
Darius James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) totaled 11 points, six rebounds and two assists while freshman
D'Yante Doughty (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) had nine points and five rebounds. Duckett and junior
Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) each added eight points off the bench while Chandler had six rebounds and Duckett hit 2-of-3 3-pointers.
Lycoming hit 6-of-13 (46 percent) of its 3-pointers and it outrebounded Alvernia, 47-30. The Warriors had 15 second-chance points and 12 points off 19 Alvernia turnovers.
Mike Miller led Alvernia with a game-high 26 points, as he hit 8-of-19 3-pointers and crossed 1,000 points in his career. Nick Youngkin added 16 points and five 3-pointers for the Golden Wolves.
The Warriors return to action on Saturday, Dec. 9, when they host Widener at 1 p.m. at Lamade Gym in a MAC Commonwealth game.
