Warriors win Dutch Burch Tip-Off Tourney opener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Four starters scored in double-figures, led by senior Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic), who had 19 points as the 22nd-ranked Lycoming College men's basketball team opened the Dutch Burch Tip-Off Tournament with a 94-84 win over Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Friday evening, Nov. 17, at Lamade Gym.
The Warriors (2-0) play the winner of the SUNY Oneonta/DeSales game on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Lamade Gym at 3 p.m. in the tournament championship. Lycoming has played in nine straight Dutch Burch tournament championships and 18 of the last 19.

Newbold led four starters and five Warriors in double-figures with his 19 points while hitting 6-of-9 shots from the field with seven rebounds and three assists. With the sixth of his 19 points, Newbold hit the 800-point mark in his career. Senior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) scored 14 points while pulling in nine boards. Sophomore Damani Myers (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Mary's) and junior Darius James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) each scored 12 as James added five rebounds and a career-high five assists. For the second straight game, freshman Ramadan Jennings (Jackson, Ohio/Life Skills) scored in double-figures off the bench, scoring 12 of 33 Lycoming bench points.

The Warriors led from start to finish as they built a 10-point lead nearly seven minutes in on two free throws from Newbold. The closest Penn State Wilkes-Barre (3-1) got the rest of the way was eight points just a few minutes later. The lead grew to 16 on a steal and layup from James with just under six minutes remaining in the first half. The lead eventually grew to 19 when Newbold, with the shot clock running down, hit a nearly half court 3-pointer with 17:30 remaining.

The Lions made a late run to cut the lead down to nine with under 10 minutes remaining, but the Warriors countered with a 9-1 run, capped by a thundering James' dunk, over a three-minute span to rebuild the lead back up to 17.

The Warriors shot nearly 53 percent from the field while making 26 free throws. They also forced 22 turnovers that led to 25 points.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre was led by a game-high 22 points from Kevin Silverberg.
