Late flurry leads Warriors to third straight Dutch Burch Tournament title

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After trailing by as many as 16 points in the first half, SUNY Oneonta cut the lead down to two early in the second half, but thanks to a 13-2 run and hot 3-point shooting, the 22nd-ranked Lycoming College men's basketball team pulled away late for a 108-86 win over SUNY Oneonta in the Dutch Tournament Tip-Off Tournament Championship on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 18, at Lamade Gym.

The Warriors won their third straight tournament championship with the win.

Lycoming (3-0) shot 8-for-11 from behind the 3-point line in the second half, while hitting 68 percent of its shots. With 14:25 remaining in the second half, the Red Dragons cut the lead down to two, but the Warriors countered with a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to regain a double-digit lead. Oneonta still hung around, cutting the double-digit lead down to single digits four more times. It wasn't until the Warriors went 5-for-5 from behind the 3-point arc in a four-minute span that they began to pull away.

Sophomore Damani Myers (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Mary's) started the onslaught with a 3-pointer with 8:31 remaining. Less than 20 seconds later, junior T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) hit another 3 and then another less than a minute later. Sophomore Ronald Jefferson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) capped the run with another 3 to put Lycoming up 15 with 4:11 remaining. The Warriors continued to pull away, ending the game on a 12-5 run to surpass the 100-point mark for the second time in three games. The 108 points is the most scored in a game since exactly a year to the day when Lycoming defeated Penn State Schuylkill, 111-81, in the opening round of the 2016 Dutch Burch tournament.

Overall, Lycoming shot 60 percent from the field and better than 62 percent (10-16) from behind the 3-point line. Senior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall), a member of the All-Tournament Team, led five Warriors in double-figures with 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Earning his second straight Dutch Burch Tournament MVP, senior Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) added 13 points, five assists and two steals.
