Summerson reaches No. 2 singles finals at MACs

Box Score WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Sophomore Hannah Summerson (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) became the first Lycoming College women's tennis player in seven years to reach the finals at the MAC Individual Championships, doing so at No. 2 singles, to lead the team on Sunday, Oct. 15, at Kirby Park.

Summerson, the No. 3 seed in her flight, defeated Misericordia's Carly Young in a gutsy comeback in the semifinals, 3-6, 6-3, 10-3, to join a group of just three Warriors that have reached the conference finals along with Rebecca Reynolds (No. 4, 2010) and Cricket Temple (No. 1, 1999, 2000, 2002).

In her finals match, Summerson fell to Wilkes' Francesca Varela-Seri, 6-2, 6-2, as Summerson finished her tournament with a 3-1 record.

On Saturday, Summerson defeated Albright's Amanda Camporeae, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round before beating Stevenson's Kirstyn Davidson, 6-0, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

Summerson also competed at No. 2 doubles in the semifinals on Sunday, teaming with sophomore partner Julia Nagle (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area), falling in a heartbreaker to second-seeded Christine Kenny and Nicole DelRosso, 9-7.

On Saturday, Summerson and Nagle received a first-round bye before beating Lebanon Valley's Sammy Bost and Megan Williams, 8-3, in the quarterfinals.

Summerson finished the fall season with an 8-4 singles record and a 6-4 doubles mark with Nagle, giving her 43 combined wins (22 singles wins, 21 doubles wins) in her career, which is just four wins outside the top 10 in school history.

In other play, fourth-seeded senior Kaitlin Hallabuk (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) fell to top-seeded Dana Saliyev of Wilkes, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles. On Saturday, Hallabuk beat Stevenson's Kelsi Mentzer in a superset tiebreaker, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 12-10 and DeSales' Sarah Chan, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the semifinals. It was her first appearance in the MAC semifinals after reaching the quarterfinals as a freshman and a junior.

The Warriors have completed the fall portion of their 2017-18 schedule, posting a 5-3 record. They will start the 2018 portion of their schedule on Tuesday, March 6, when they head to Clarks Summit for a 4 p.m. match.
