Warriors surge past Dutchmen in fourth, 72-56

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals and senior Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) posted 18 points and six assistsĀ  as the Lycoming College women's basketball team used a fourth-quarter surge to post a 72-56 win over Lebanon Valley College at Lamade Gymnasium on Wednesday evening, Jan. 4, at Lamade Gym.

Holding a slim 43-39 advantage heading into the fourth quarter, the Warriors (9-4 overall, 3-2 MAC Commonwealth) took over in the fourth quarter, shooting 67 percent (8-of-12) from the field while holding the Flying Dutchmen (6-8 overall, 3-2 MAC Commonwealth) to just 19 percent (4-of-21).

In the first four minutes of the period, the Warriors broke open the game with a 14-2 run which was capped by three straight baskets in transition, a 3-pointer from freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area), a layup on the run by Calella on a pass from McFadden and an old-fashioned 3-point play from junior Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) off a steal and pass from McFadden to make it 57-41 with 5:56 left to play.

The Dutchmen cut the lead to 14 on a pair of free throws, but never got closer than that again, as Lycoming took a 22-point lead off a steal and bucket from freshman Morgan Mader (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) with 47 seconds left before back-to-back 3-pointers from Lebanon Valley made up the final margin.

Four Warriors finished in double figures, led by Calella and McFadden. Kline finished with 12 ponts and seven rebounds and Mueller added 11 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Freshman Hailey Dayton (Reisterstown, Md./St. Timothy's) finished with eight points and two steals and junior Haley Sipple (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) added eight rebounds.

Becky Evans led the Dutchmen with 19 points, five assists and three steals and Morgan Bamberger posted 11 points. Lexie Lantz contributed eight points and 15 rebounds.

The two teams fought through three ties and a lead change in the first quarter with neither team leading by more than four points. In the second quarter, took over with a run of seven straight points early in the half, as Calella laid in a fastbreak bucket off a steal from McFadden with 7:28 left to make it 21-15. The Dutchmen whittled that lead in half by the break at 27-24, and even tied the game at 27 with the first shot of the third quarter on a 3-pointer from Becky Evans. Kline responded with an old-fashioned 3-point play, though and Lycoming never trailed again, leading by at least four for the rest of the quarter.

Lycoming finished with 19 points in transition while holding LVC to just five while also holding a 32-20 advantage on points in the paint. LVC hit just 29 percent (20-of-70) from the field and Lycoming shot 46 percent (27-of-59), including 14-of-27 in the second half.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 7, when they head to Stevenson for a 4 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game after the men play at 2 p.m.
