Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) tied a career high with 20 points and added four steals and junior
Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) posted 16 points, 11 rebounds and five steals to lead the Lycoming College women's basketball team, but Stevenson University was able to overcome 25 turnovers to post a 69-61 win in MAC Commonwealth action at Owings Mills Gymnasium on Saturday evening, Jan. 7.
Stevenson (7-6 overall, 4-2 MAC Commonwealth) was able to overcome the 25 turnovers and 19 Lycoming steals by shooting 51 percent from the floor (25-of-49) and 50 percent (7-of-14) from 3-point range. Lycoming (9-5 overall, 3-3 MAC Commonwealth) struggled from the floor, hitting just 31 percent (20-of-64) of its shots.
The Warriors had two players finish with five steals in Mueller and freshman
Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg), while McFadden had four and junior
Haley Sipple (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) added three, which helped the team to 23 points off turnover, but just four on the fastbreak.
Stevenson led by as many as 12 early in the second quarter before taking an eight-point lead into the break. The Warriors made sure it would stay a game by scoring the first seven points in the third quarter to make it 35-34 after a layup by Mueller with 7:51 left.
The Mustangs got the lead back to 10 points late in the quarter with a 14-5 run to make it 49-39 with 2:22 left, but the Warriors closed the period with six straight points, with the run spurred by an old-fashioned 3-point play from Mueller. The Warriors continued to roll, taking the lead with 8:29 left in the fourth quarter on another layup by Mueller that made it 51-49, but that was the last lead Lycoming held.
Stevenson took the lead on a 3-point play from Jonyae Curry and although Lycoming stayed within two possessions until the 3:00 minute mark, the Warriors were never able to draw even. A 3-pointer from Kaitlyn Van Tash with 2:59 left gave Stevenson a 64-57 lead and Lycoming was only able to close within five points once more.
The Warriors took a 14-9 lead in the first quarter, as freshman
Morgan Mader (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) hit a 3-pointer with 4:22 left, but the Mustangs ended the period with 12 straight points and they added to the lead by a point at the end of the second quarter, taking a 35-27 lead into the locker room.
Freshman
Hailey Dayton (Reisterstown, Md./St. Timothy's) finished with seven points and two rebounds and Kline added five points, six rebounds and five steals.
Stevenson was led by 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and three steals from Preseason All-American Sara Tarbert. Curry also had 17 points and Sara Downing recorded 16 points for the Mustangs.
The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Jan. 10, when they head to Albright College for a 5 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game as part of a conference doubleheader.
