WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Seniors
Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) and
Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) each earned All-Tournament honors to lead the Lycoming College wrestling team at the 29
th annual Budd Whitehill Duals, as the team finished in third place for the second time in three years, falling 24-14 to eighth-ranked Messiah in the semifinals before beating Wis.-Eau Claire, 25-17, in the third-place match on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 14, at Lamade Gym.
The Warriors took control of the third-place match against Wis.-Eau Claire with five straight wins in the heart of the lineup to post the 25-17 decision and take third for the second time in three years and the fifth time in the tournament's history.
Sophomore
Joe Santomarco (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) got the team going at 141 with a 4-0 win over Scott Worlund before Lansberry posted a 6-1 win over Carter Focht at 149. Freshman
Hadyn Swartwood (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) gave the Warriors the lead with a pin of Connor Hanson in 1:58 at 157 to make it 12-8. Barger added a pin in 3:44 over Toby Mosley at 165 and junior
Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) capped the run with a 6-1 win over Tyler Vogt at 174 to make it 21-8.
Freshman
Travis Ogden (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) rounded out Lycoming's scoring with a 19-8 win over Cecil Philson at 197.
Despite taking a lead with four straight match wins in the semifinals, the Warriors fell victim to a come-from-behind win by eighth-ranked Messiah, 24-14.
The Falcons built a 10-0 lead through the first two matches, but Lycoming stormed back with four straight wins to take a 14-10 lead. Santomarco started the comeback with a 6-3 win over Lee Cassel at 141 before Lansberry a 10-2 major decision against Adam Peris at 149.
Swartwood gave the Warriors the lead with a 10-2 major decision over Tag Wilbur at 157 and seventh-ranked Barger won his 127
th match with a 3-2 upset win over sixth-ranked Larry Cannon, scoring a first-period takedown and warding off several late shots from Cannon to earn the win at 165.
Messiah scored the last 14 points, though, with four straight wins to close the match.
The Warriors get back on the mat at the five-team Middle Atlantic Conference Championships on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 10:30 a.m. at Messiah College.
