Warriors fall to Pride

CHESTER, Pa. – Junior Peter Pluta (Honeyoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) and senior Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West) each posted two goals to lead the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team on Saturday, April 9, but Widener University used a seven-goal second half to post a 13-5 MAC Commonwealth win at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
 
Widener (4-5 overall, 3-0 MAC Commonwealth) got on the board with two goals just 20 seconds apart, with Tyler Schulte scoring with 12:59 left in the period. Like the Pride, the Warriors (2-8 overall, 1-2 MAC Commonwealth) responded with two goals in just 33 seconds, both on assists from freshman Tim Breau (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) to knot the game at two with 8:00 left in the opening quarter after Reilly's first goal.
 
Widener got two goals late in the quarter, but Lycoming started the second period with a quick strike from Pluta. The Pride added two more goals before Pluta found Reilly for a man-up goal with 6:12 left in the half, sending the team's into the break with Widener leading 6-4.
 
In the third quarter, Widener again used a pair of goals 17 seconds apart to take an 8-4 lead before Pluta scored again on a man-up situation. However, the Warriors couldn't get any closer, with Widener scoring the last five goals of the game.
 
Pluta finished with two goals and an assist and Breau added two assists. Freshman Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) scored once and both junior Kyle Armstrong (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) and senior Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary's) each added three ground balls and caused a turnover.
 
Tim Taylor led the Pride with three goals and five assists and Tyler Schulte posted five goals, an assist and five ground balls. Anthony Paone picked up nine ground balls and won 16-of-22 faceoffs. Bryan Facciani and John Ferguson each caused three turnovers.
 
Freshman Joshua Tscheulin (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) (1-4) stopped seven shots in net for the Warriors while also picking up four ground balls. Matt Horton earned the win for the Pride, stopping three shots and allowing three goals in 50 minutes.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 13, when they host 15th-ranked Stevenson University in a 3:30 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
