FREDERICK, Md. – Senior
Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West) and freshman
Tim Breau (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) combined to score nine goals to lead a group of seven Lycoming College men's lacrosse players that found the scoring column, as it posted a critical 16-10 MAC Commonwealth win over Hood College on Saturday, April 16, at Thomas Athletic Field.
Â
Reilly notched five goals and five assists to give him at least 10 points in a game for the second time this year and Breau was able to keep hold of the team's point lead with four goals and two assists, although Reilly, with 27 points in just five games, is just one point behind Breau.
Â
The Warriors (3-9 overall, 2-3 MAC Commonwealth) were forced to be efficient, thanks to the great faceoff work of Zach Kauffman, who won 23-of-30. However, with 34 shots in the game, Lycoming converted 16 goals and put 25 on cage. The Warriors also forced a season-high tying 24 turnovers and held a 24-19 advantage in groundballs that weren't gained through a faceoff.
Â
Hood (4-9 overall, 0-6 MAC Commonwealth) got on the board first, with Grayson Zubradt scoring a man-up goal due to too many players on the field with 11:59 left. The Warriors settled in after that, as Reilly got the team's scoring started before Breau scored with 7:58 left in the opening quarter to take the lead. After Hood tied the game with 6:34 left, the Warriors went on a run of seven straight goals to finish the half, led on the run by two goals and four assists from Reilly. Senior
Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) found Breau for the last goal in the half with 30 seconds left to make it 9-2.
Â
In the third quarter, the Blazers scored the first three goals to make it 9-5 with 8:39 left, but Lycoming responded with a 5-1 run, as junior
Peter Pluta (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) found Reilly to make it 14-6 with 6:36 left in the fourth quarter.
Â
Hood did score four of the final six goals, but two goals in the final minute helped close the final margin to six goals.
Â
Freshmen
Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and
Andrew Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) each scored two goals and both Pluta and Cooper added a goal and two assists for the Warriors. Junior
Brendan Loftus (Pine Brooke, N.J./Montville Township) posted four ground balls and freshman
Ryan Fetzer (Jenkintown, Pa./Abington) added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Cooper and freshman
Eric Schutta (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) each posted two caused turnovers.
Â
Zubradt led the Blazers with four goals and Alex Villegas notched two goals and an assist. Eddie Somerville added two goals and six ground balls and Kauffman finished with a game-high 13 ground balls. Eamon Mulligan posted two caused turnovers.
Â
Freshman
Joshua Tscheulin (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) (2-5) earned the win, making eight saves and allowing two goals in the first half. Freshman
Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) added six saves while playing a majority of the second half.
Â
Hood's John Hoffman stopped nine shots in the loss.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 20, at 4 p.m., when they head to Lebanon Valley for a key MAC Commonwealth matchup.
