Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Warriors fall in heartbreaker to Misericordia

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Andrew Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) led all scorers with four goals, scoring his last with 2:06 left to pull the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team within a point, but a strong defensive stand by Misericordia University helped it to a 10-9 win in a very physical non-conference battle on Saturday afternoon, March 19, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Ream picked up two groundballs to go with his four goals while junior Peter Pluta (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) scored twice and had an assist. Senior Lee Pappas (New Windsor, Md./Glenelg Country School) and freshman Tim Breau (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) each contributed three assists.

With 2:06 remaining in the game, Pappas sent a pass from behind the net towards Ream. After being pushed from behind, Ream caught the pass in mid-air and, in the same motion, flicked his wrists to score an acrobatic goal to reduce the deficit to 10-9. Despite junior Kyle Armstrong (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) winning yet another face-off and giving the Warriors (1-6) one final offensive possession, the Cougars (4-1) were able to force a man-down turnover in front of the crease and send the ball up the field to run out the final 15 seconds.

Ream got the game's scoring started as he received a pass from Pappas and fired a shot to give the Warriors the initial 1-0 lead with 10:04 left in the first. The Cougars were strong the rest of the quarter, though, as they scored three straight to take a 3-1 lead. Both teams scored three goals in the second as the Warriors went into halftime trailing 6-4.

The Cougars scored first in the third but Pluta scored just 2:25 later on a man-up opportunity to get the goal back. After another Cougar goal, freshman Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) scored his first career goal with just 87 seconds remaining in the quarter to keep the Warrior deficit at two. Just 80 seconds after giving up a Cougar goal in the fourth, Ream and freshman Ryan Donofry (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) scored just 65 seconds apart to bring the deficit to a goal at 9-8. But with 2:51 remaining in the game, the Cougars got a huge goal from Pat Kellish for their 10th of the game before Ream's diving goal just 45 seconds later.

Sophomore Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) notched one goal and one assist in the game and came away with two ground balls. Senior Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary's) anchored the defense with six groundballs and two caused turnovers while Armstrong and freshmen Austin Arroyo (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Eric Schutta (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) each picked up three groundballs. Freshman Cole Masterson (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) also made his presence felt on defense, as he was able to cause a team-high three turnovers.

Armstrong was also solid at the 'x' today, winning 14-of-19 face-offs for the Warriors.

The Cougars were led by Chris Fleming and Pat Kellish, who both recorded three goals, an assist, and four groundballs with Kellish also causing three turnovers. Lane Kocovsky scored twice and added an assist while Michael Iglio and Philip Fraher both recorded a goal and an assist to round out the scoring. Ryan Cannon led the defense with six ground balls while Pat Newins picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Freshman Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College H.S.) (1-4) took the loss in net for the Warriors, making four saves in 30 minutes of action while fellow freshman Joshua Tscheulin (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) played the second half and stopped three shots. Josh Shanker (3-1) got the win in net for the Cougars as he stopped nine shots.

The Warriors will return to the field on Saturday, April 2, when they open MAC Commonwealth play at home against Arcadia at 1 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.?
