Reilly returns, Warriors win

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The last time senior Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West) played in a game at the Shangraw Athletic Complex, he provided a game-winning score in a MAC Commonwealth Championship first round game in 2014. A rash of injuries and a season and a half later, Reilly finally came back to the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team on Saturday, April 2, and all he did was provide six goals and five assists to spark the team to a MAC Commonwealth-opening 18-6 win over Arcadia.

The 11 points are tied for the seventh-most in school history and the most since Matt McCaffer had 10 goals and an assist against Alvernia on March 28, 2013. Reilly was just part of a revamped Warrior offense, which also benefitted from the first action of the year from senior Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding), as he finished with two goals and two assists.

Meanwhile, the usual suspects also helped power Lycoming (2-6 overall, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) to a season-high 52 shots. Freshman Tim Breau (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) notched a career-best five goals and two assists and senior Jake Wanamaker (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) added a goal and two assists. Sophomore Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) also added a goal and an assist.

Arcadia (2-6 overall, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) jumped out of the gate with a goal just 93 seconds into the contest, after winning the first faceoff, but Lycoming responded in a big way. Cooper, with his first shot of the season, found the back of the net before Reilly found Breau for a pair of goals. The Knights fought back to tie the game at three, with a pair of goals in 37 seconds, but Reilly addeded two goals in the final 3:31 of the first quarter, igniting a 10-goal run by Lycoming that encompassed nearly half the game.

Lycoming drilled five goals in the second quarter while taking 19 shots to take an 11-3 lead into the break. In the third quarter, Reilly scored the first two goals of the period to make it 13-3. Arcadia scored the next three goals, reaching within seven goals, but Breau added two more goals and Cooper found Reilly for a school with 7:00 left to keep Arcadia at least eight goals behind for the rest of the game.

The Warriors dominated nearly every aspect of the game, winning 20-of-28 at the 'x' thanks to an outstanding 19-of-25 effort from junior Kyle Armstrong (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley). Lycoming also held a 46-28 advantage in ground balls, led by eight from Armstrong and a career-high six from freshman Austin Arroyo (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin). Freshman Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) also added five ground balls. The team also forced 21 turnovers, with Arroyo causing four and freshman Eric Schutta (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) focing two and grabbing four ground balls.

Chris Jocovino, Joe Stanton and Kenny Grant each had two goals for the Knights and Matt Mignogna added a goal and three assists. Casey Fayan led the team with four ground balls and Steve McCrossin added two caused turnovers.

Freshman Joshua Tscheulin (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) (1-2) earned his first career win for the Warriors, as he made seven saves in 58 minutes in goal before sophomore Will McAndrew (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) finished the game in net.

Danny Lipkin (1-4) made three saves and allowed 11 goals in the first half, while A.J. Beck added nine saves and allowed five goals in the second half for the Knights.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 6, when they head to Messiah for a 3:30 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
