Warriors drop heartbreaker to Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Junior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) led the Lycoming College men's basketball team with a team-high 20 points, but the team was unable to hold onto a late lead, falling 86-84 against Arcadia in a tough MAC Commonwealth matchup on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 6, in Alumni Gymnasium.

The loss drops the Warriors to 15-7 overall with a 7-6 MAC Commonwealth record while the Knights improve to 14-7 overall and 7-5 in conference.

Wallace shot 8-for-12 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds and a steal. Juniors Nyk King (Harlem, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Math) and Willie Kee (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) both scored 12 points with King pulling in eight rebounds and Kee finishing with three rebounds and four assists. Freshman T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) contributed 11 points on 3-for-5 shooting from long range and three rebounds.

The Knights refused to quit in the final minute and cut their deficit down to 81-79 before King hit a clutch three with 33 seconds left to give the Warriors a five-point lead. After John Landro hit a three to cut the Warrior lead back to two, the Warriors were called for a 5-second violation on an inbounds pass which led to the go-ahead three from Brandon Thompson. Following a turnover on the next Warrior possession, Thompson hit the back end of two free throws with three seconds left to seal the win for the Knights.

After both teams exchanged seven points to begin the second, the Warriors got layups from Wallace and junior David Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) to take a 52-47 lead. After the Knights came back with seven points in a row, King converted an old-fashioned three-point play to take the lead back, 55-54. The teams kept battling but Arcadia was able to take a three-point lead after Thompson hit a 3-pointer, but Kee was able to convert on an old-fashioned three of his own to tie the game back up at 60.

After giving up a three, the Warriors stormed back with eight straight points to take a 68-63 lead. Arcadia came back right away to tie the game at 70 on a three from Landro, but then Johnson responded with a three of his own to take back the three point lead. The next two Warrior possessions ended in old-fashioned three-point plays by Wallace as the Warriors took a 79-72 lead with 4:37 remaining.

After the Knights opened up with a slight 7-6 advantage to begin the game, the Warriors fought back with seven straight points for the early 13-7 lead. Both teams battled back and forth until sophomore Roger Wilson (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) hit a layup to give the Warriors a 20-14 lead, tying their largest lead of the first half. The Knights showed great toughness throughout the rest of the half as they fought back to take a 35-34 lead.

Late in the first half, Kee hit two free throws after Duckett also hit two to take a 38-35 lead following a technical foul called on the Knights. The Knights came back with five points, including an old-fashioned three by senior Alex Cohen to take a 40-38 lead. Refusing to trail at the half, Wallace inbounded the ball to Kee who hit a deep three at the buzzer to take a 41-40 lead into halftime.

As a team, the Warriors shot 32-for-61 (.525) from the field in the game, including 7-for-14 from three-point land and held the rebounding advantage, 40-33. The game consisted of 11 ties and 14 lead changes as both teams showed great resilience throughout.

Thompson led all scorers in the game with 25 points including 6-for-12 on three's to go along with three rebounds. Landro finished with 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists while freshman Josh Scott scored 18 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal.

The Warriors will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 10, as they host Albright at 8 p.m. in a vital MAC Commonwealth contest.?
