GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman
Andrew Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) scored a pair of goals for the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team, as the team used a sterling defensive effort to hold Gwynedd Mercy, predicted to finish second in the Colonial States Athletic Conference, scoreless in the fourth quarter to post a 6-5 non-conference win on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 27, at the Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Ream needed just three shots to score his two goals, while senior
Jake Wanamaker (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) and sophomore
Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) both added two assists for the Warriors (1-2 overall).
The Warriors (1-2) opened the game with two goals in the first quarter as junior
Peter Pluta (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) scored on a man-up opportunity followed by Ream's first score. The Warriors extended the lead to 3-0 in the second after Huff assisted freshman
Tim Breau (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) on another man-up opportunity. The Griffins (0-1) got the goal back two minutes later, but the Warriors also answered quickly as Huff found senior
Lee Pappas (New Windsor, Md./Glenelg Country School) to regain a three-goal advantage with 11:04 left. After a goal by freshman
Alex Artur (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) extended the lead to 5-1, the Griffins got a goal from Nick Guglielmi to go into halftime trailing 5-2.
The Griffins were able to score first in the second half, but Ream scored again just 97 seconds later to keep a three-goal lead with 12 minutes left. Griffin senior Tony McGraw scored twice in a span of 1:11 to pull within a point with 25 minutes left. However, freshman
Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) stoned the Griffins from there, making nine saves in the second half, including five in the final 15 minutes to seal the win.
The Warriors won 11-of-14 at the 'x' and also converted 2-of-4 man-up opportunities and held the Griffins to 0-for-3. The Warriors also forced 17 turnovers and picked up 17 ground balls.
The trio of junior
Kyle Armstrong (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) and Tenantand
Eric Schutta (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) each grabbed three ground while Schutta and senior
Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary's) caused three turnovers. Armstrong and sophomore
Tim Runo (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) were very effective at the 'x' as Armstrong went 8-for-10 and Runo won three-of-four
. Tenant played all 60 minutes and got the win in net for the Warriors and making 18 saves. Sean Myers took the loss in net for the Griffins, as he made nine saves.
The Warriors will return to action on Wednesday, March 2, when they travel to Ithaca at 4 p.m. for a tough non-conference matchup at Higgins Stadium.?
