Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Warriors fall in season opener to Susquehanna

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Jake Wanamaker (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) led the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team with a goal and an assist, but the team fell victim to solid offensive and defensive play from Susquehanna University, falling 13-4 in the season opener on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 20, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East), freshman Tim Breau (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima), and junior Peter Pluta (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) each also contributed a goal for the Warriors (0-1 overall) while senior Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary's) contributed an assist.

The Crusaders (1-0 overall) set the tone early by scoring the first six goals, including four in the first quarter. A little over a minute after surrendering the sixth goal, Wanamaker found Pluta, who fired a laser into the left corner, for the Warriors' first score of the season, but the Warriors went into halftime trailing 6-1.

Looking to swing momentum in their direction, the Warriors got on the board first in the third quarter as Wagner assisted Breau just 2:26 into the second half. The game went scoreless for the next six minutes before the Crusaders scored twice in a span of 90 seconds to regain a six-goal advantage. Still fighting, the Warriors ended the quarter with two goals, one from Wanamaker and one from Huff, in a span of just 45 seconds to pull back to 8-4 and remain in striking distance. In the fourth, five different Crusaders scored a goal to make up the final margin.

The Warriors forced 20 turnovers in the game and stayed with the Crusaders, firing 27 shots compared to 30 by the Crusaders. The Crusaders held a slim advantage in ground balls (31-25), thanks to winning 14 of 20 faceoffs.

The Crusaders were led by sophomore Alec Tzaneteas, who scored four goals in the game. Senior Nick Reardon led the team in total points with six (one goal, five assists) while junior Chet McLaughlin also contributed five points (two goals, three assists).

Freshman Eric Schutta (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) led the Warriors with four groundballs and one caused turnover and junior Jacob Eller (Durham, N.C./Riverside) and Wagner each added three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Freshman Joshua Tscheulin (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) played the first half in goal for the Warriors and made five stops while freshman Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College H.S.) played the second half in goal and stopped two shots. Freshman Dylan Abplanalp got the win for the Crusaders in the net, stopping eight shots.

Kade MacGregor led the Crusaders with four groundballs and two caused turnovers.

The Warriors will return to the field on Wednesday, Feb. 24, when they travel to Geneseo for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup.
