Warriors upset bid of #10 Albright comes up short

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) and junior Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) led the Lycoming College women's basketball team with 12 points, but the team's upset bid of 10th-ranked Albright College came up short, 65-57, in a MAC Commonwealth matchup on Wednesday night, Feb. 10, in Lamade Gym.

The loss drops the Warriors to 13-10 overall and 8-6 in the MAC Commonwealth while the Lions improve to 21-2 overall and 13-1 in conference.

Manges shot 4-for-8 from three-point land, giving her 44 3-pointers on the season which ties her with Allison Mock (2009-10) for the third-most 3-pointers made in a season. Calella shot 6-for-13 (.462) from the field to go along with four rebounds and eight assists, moving her past Adrienne Wydra into sole possession of fifth place on the all-time assists list (294).

Sophomore Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) recorded her second career double-double, as she finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) also scored 10 to go along with three rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and four steals.

The Warriors looked sharp to start the game as Calella helped fuel an 11-4 run with two jumpers and two assists. The Lions came roaring back, as they held the Warriors without a field goal for the final 4:29 while scoring 14 points of their own to take an 18-11 lead into the second quarter. With two layups in the first, Mueller became the 42nd player in program history to pass the 500-point mark in a career.

The Warriors began the second period by scoring the first eight points to regain the lead, 19-18. The run was fueled by sophomore Haley Sipple (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester), who hit jumpers from inside and beyond-the-arc off assists from Calella. The Lions came back again as they outscored the Warriors 10-4 for the rest of the quarter to take a 28-23 lead into the half.

After both teams exchanged six points to begin the third, the Lions scored eight straight points, capped off by a layup from senior Kelecia Harris to take a 42-29 lead. The Warriors fought back as Henderson hit two free throws with 12 seconds left then, following a steal by Mueller on the ensuing Lions possession, Henderson hit a layup to beat the buzzer to cut the deficit back down to eight points.

The teams exchanged 11 points through the first half of the fourth quarter before freshman Shelby Schoonover (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) hit a three and Calella hit a layup to cut the deficit down to 56-52. After the teams exchanged three-point baskets, Lions senior Emily O'Donnell hit a layup with 48 seconds left and the game was then iced away by Lion free throws.

As a team, the Warriors shot 7-for-16 (.438) from long range and made all eight of their free throws attempts. The Warriors forced the Lions into 16 turnovers and held a 12-4 advantage in fastbreak points.

Harris led the way for the Lions as she also had a double-double, 18 points and 13 rebounds, on 8-for-13 shooting (.615) and five blocks. Sophomore Jane Joyce finished with 12 points and five assists and sophomore Nina Mazzarelli finished with 10 points.

The Warriors will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 13, when they host MAC Commonwealth foe Hood College in the home finale at 1 p.m. in Lamade Gym.? Before the game, seniors Henderson and Manges will be honored in a brief ceremony.
