Warriors fall to Hood

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) led the Lycoming College women's basketball team with 19 points, but the team fell victim to a late surge from Hood in a 59-54 MAC Commonwealth decision on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 13, at Lamade Gym.

The Warriors fall to 13-11 overall with an 8-7 MAC Commonwealth record while the Blazers improved to 5-18 overall and 1-13 in the MAC Commonwealth.
Mueller shot 8-of-15 (.533) from the field and pulled in 10 rebounds to record her second straight double-double. Mueller also finished with a career-high four assists and tied her career-high with three blocks. Senior Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Junior Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) finished with nine points, four assists, a steal, and a block and sophomore Haley Sipple (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) tied her career-high in rebounds with seven.

The Warriors were able to hold the Blazers scoreless on their first five possessions while senior Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) gave the Warriors the first lead of the game with a beautiful crossover and drive in the paint. After Manges hit a three to give the Warriors a 5-2 lead, the Blazers closed the quarter on an 8-3 run to take a 10-8 lead. Manges' three moved her past Allison Mock (2009-10) for third-most in a single season (45) while Henderson recorded her 100th rebound for the third consecutive season with three boards in the first.

Mueller who scored six points in the first three minutes of the second quarter to keep the Warriors close, trailing 17-14. The teams continued to battle but, trailing by four, Calella drove through a wide open lane for an easy layup with 57 seconds left followed by a long two-point jumper by Manges to tie the game, 23-23, on the final possession of the first half.

The Warriors held the Blazers to 8-for-33 shooting (.242) in the first half and forced 13 turnovers.

After surrendering a Blazer layup, the Warriors scored 10 straight points, eight by Mueller, part of an overall 15-6 run to take a 38-31 lead with 3:26 left. The Blazers fought back quickly as they outscored the Warriors 10-2 the rest of the quarter to take a 41-40 lead into the fourth.

A layup by Calella tied the game, 46-46, with 6:09 left, but the Blazers scored six straight points to take a 52-46 lead. With 27 seconds left, Calella hit a layup to cut the Warrior deficit to one point at 55-54, but the Warriors were unable to score again and Blazer junior Allie Appleby sealed the win with four free throws.

As a team, the Warriors were able to hold the Blazers to 20-for-60 shooting from the field and 2-for-11 from long range while forcing 19 turnovers and outscoring the Blazers 34-22 in the paint.

Appleby led the way for the Blazers as she scored a team-high 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting while senior Alexis Briscoe finished with 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Freshman Mackenzie Grove notched 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting and senior Verkia Smith recorded a game-high 14 rebounds.  

The Warriors will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 20, as they travel to face MAC Commonwealth rival Lebanon Valley for the season finale at 1 p.m. at Sorrentino Gym.
