Warriors post 86-78 win over Nazareth

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Using another night of hot shooting to its advantage, the Lycoming College men's basketball team had five players reach double figures for the second game in a row as it posted an 86-78 win over Nazareth College in non-conference action at Lamade Gym on Friday night, Dec. 16.

The Warriors (9-1 overall) shot 58 percent (32-of-55) from the floor, including an incredibly hot 67 percent (18-of-27) to provide distance from the Golden Flyers (4-3 overall), who used the long ball to stay in the game, thanks to 10 3-pointers.

Nazareth cut Lycoming's five-point halftime lead to two with a 3-pointer to start the second half and closed within a point with 10:28 left in the half after a transition 3-pointer from Cody Green made it 58-57, but the Warriors responded with an 11-2 run that featured four points from junior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) and ended with a jumper from the wing by freshman Ronald Jefferson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) with 6:37 left to make it 70-59.

Lycoming didn't let the Flyers within seven points until they started a 9-2 run with less than two minutes left, cutting the game down to four points with 22 seconds left off a 3-pointer from Josh Gillard, making it 80-76. However, senior David Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) hit four free throws to ice the game in the final seconds before junior Darius James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) put an exclamation mark on the win with a transition dunk.

Shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first half, the Warriors built a lead as big as 13 points before Nazareth used a 10-2 run at the end of the half to close within five at 37-32.

The Warriors began to create separation with a nine-point run that lasted four minutes in the middle of the half, with sophomore T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) capping the run with a wide-open second chance 3-pointer.

The Golden Eagles cut the lead down to five points with 4:03 left off a jumper from Brendan Wind, but the Warriors responded with a pair of old-fashioned 3-point plays, one from senior Nyk King (Harlem, N.Y./Manhattan School for Science & Math) and one from Johnson to build the lead to 35-22 with 2:09 left. However, Nazareth got a pair of 3-pointers from Cody Green to cut the lead back to five at the final horn in the first half.

Wallace led the Warriors for the second straight game, finishing with 16 points and seven rebounds and King added 14 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals. Johnson added 12 points and four rebounds, James finished with 11 points and two assists and Jefferson notched 10 points. Freshman Damani Myers (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Mary's) chipped in eight points and five assists.

Tyler Stenglein led the Golden Flyers with 24 points and six rebounds, Green finished with 15 points off five 3-pointers and Brendan Wind notched 12 points, 11 assists and six rebounds. Gillard also added 12 points and five rebounds and Denzell Jackson finished with eight points and nine rebounds.

The Warriors get back on the court on Sunday, Dec. 18, when they host SUNY Potsdam in non-conference action at 1 p.m. in Lamade Gym.
