Warriors rout Penn State Hazleton in opener, 84-65

HAZLETON, Pa. – Freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area)  posted 14 points and 15 rebounds in her collegiate debut and sophomore Jenn Grove (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Lycoming College women's basketball team to an 84-65 win at Penn State Hazleton in the season-opener on Thursday night, Nov. 17.

The Warriors (1-0 overall) held the Nittany Lions (4-1 overall) to 29 percent (16-of-55) from the field and took control of the game in the second and third quarters, outscoring the Lions, 54-25. The Warriors shot 48 percent (29-of-41) in those two quarters and 36 percent (31-of-86) for the game.

Four Warriors finished in double figures, led by the double-double efforts from Kline, who suffered a knee injury that kept her off the court at Mifflinburg for most of her senior year, and Grove. Junior Haley Sipple (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) added 13 points and four rebounds and sophomore Becca Painter (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) added 10 points, three assists and three steals.

Lycoming dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Lions, 34-17, using a 28-12 run in the half's final 6:37 to take a 49-32 lead into the break. Sipple led the run with nine points and sophomore Shelby Schoonover (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) added six to pace the team, as Schoonover put a period on the half with a long two-pointer at the buzzer.

The lead continued to grow in the third quarter, with three straight layups from junior Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) highlighting an 18-4 run that left the Warriors with a 71-40 lead with 9:25 left in the fourth quarter. From there, the Lions were able to cut the lead to less than 20, but not before there were only 70 seconds remaining.

The Lions took a 5-2 lead in the first quarter before Lycoming put together a 9-2 run to take an 11-7 lead after an old-fashioned 3-point play by freshman Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg). However, the Lions were able to comeback and tie the game at 15 heading into the second period thanks to three free throws from Ijonana Lester with five seconds left.

Mueller finished with eight points and eight rebounds and McFadden posted seven points, nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks and four steals. Schoonover added six points and four rebounds and both freshmen Morgan Mader (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) and junior Hailey Fricke (Denver, Pa./Garden Spot) each added five points.

Haley Nalls led the Nittany Lions with 23 points, seven rebounds and four steals. McKenzie Prutsman added 15 points and four assists and Ijonana Laster finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Nov. 19, when they head to Franklin & Marshall for the Terry Green Tip-Off Classic, where they will face King's at 6 p.m.
