Warriors drive past Fredonia, 80-66

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Ronald Jefferson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) poured in 17 points to lead the Lycoming College men's basketball team in his debut, as he led a Lycoming squad that shot a healthy 48 percent and posted 17 fastbreak points en route to a 80-66 season-opening win over Fredonia State on Tuesday night, Nov. 15, at Lamade Gym.
The Warriors (1-0 overall) hit 30-of-63 shots from the field, including 8-of-18 from 3-point range, even though only Jefferson finished in double figures. Nine players had at least five points, though, led by the rookie that hit 4-of-8 from the field and 2-of-4 from long-range, plus 7-of-9 at the free-throw line.

Lycoming was able to push pace, posting a 17-11 advantage in fastbreak points and a 38-26 advantage in the paint, while Fredonia finished with 21 points off 15 Lycoming turnovers.

Junior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) posted eight points and 11 rebounds, sophomore T.J Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) had nine points and two rebounds. Freshman Damani Myers (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Mary's) finished with eight points and four assists, senior Willie Kee (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) added seven points and three assists and sophomore Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) had seven points, three rebounds and a block.

The Blue Devils (0-1 overall) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game's first 90 seconds, but Lycoming took its first lead with a 3-pointer by Kee with 13:54 left. After a fastbreak bucket tied it for the Devils, Lycoming embarked on a 22-3 run that encompassed the next seven minutes, with a fastbreak coast-to-coast bucket by Wallace ending the run.

The Devils got the Warriors' lead back to single-digits at the break at 42-33, but a 3-pointer from Myers early in the second half got the lead back to double digits, where it stayed for the rest of the game. A fastbreak 3-pointer from Duckett gave Lycoming a 65-44 lead with 10:44 left and it wasn't until the waning minutes that Fredonia could close back within 12 points.
Senior Nyk King (Harlem, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science & Math) had six points, five rebounds and three assists and junior Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) added six points and three rebouds. Junior Darius James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) and senior David Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) each had five points.

Kareem Brown led the Devils with 17 points and five rebounds and Dante Williams added 13 points, four assists and five rebounds. Tommie Banks led the team with six rebounds and three blocks. Fredonia finished 23-of-68 (34 percent) from the floor and 19 percent (5-of-27) from 3-point range.

The Warriors get back on the court on Friday, Nov. 18, when they host Penn State Schuylkill in the opening round of the Dutch Burch Tip-Off at 6 p.m. in Lamade Gym. Haverford will face Western Connecticut State at 8 p.m. in the other first round game.
