Crebs named Robert Darrow Curry Coach of the Year

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College head wrestling coach Roger Crebs received the seventh annual Robert Darrow Curry Coach of the Year award, presented Saturday, May 16, by longtime college administrator and assistant football coach Robb Curry '69 at Lycoming's 30th annual Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

In his 22nd year as head coach of the Warriors, Crebs' wrestlers turned in one of the most memorable campaigns in his tenure. The team finished 13-3 in dual meets, the team's best record since 2001-02 and finished 21st at the NCAA Division III Championships, the best finish since 2007-08. The Warriors also finished third at the Budd Whitehill National Duals, the team's best finish at the annual event since 2005-06, which helped the squad enter the national rankings where it reached as high as 20th in the NWCA Coaches' Poll.

Along the way, Crebs coached sophomore Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) to a third-place finish and All-American status at the NCAA Division III Championships, as Barger became Crebs' 20th All-American and first since 2009. He coached two NCAA qualifiers, the most for the program since 2009, as both Barger and senior Johnathan Secor (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) won NCAA Mideast Regional titles.

The team was just as successful in the classroom, as it was honored as one of the Division III All-Academic Top 30 Teams. He coached three NWCA Division III Scholar All-Americans (Barger, Sam Batchelor and Caleb Willey) and five Academic All-MAC selections as a record seven wrestlers were named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll.

This is the second time that Crebs, a Lewisburg, Pa., native, has won the award, also earning it in 2010-11 when he won his 300th career dual meet. In 22 seasons, Crebs is 349-118-2 (.746) in dual meets and he has coached 46 conference champions, 20 All-Americans and four national champions. He has coached all five of the school's 100-match winners and he was inducted into the District 4 Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2011 and the NWCA Division III Hall of Fame in 2012.

The award, given annually to a member of the Lycoming coaching staff, was established in memory of Robert (Robby) D. Curry '05, who was the son of Robert '69 and Susan Curry. Robb was Lycoming's football recruiting coordinator and associate athletic director for 36 years, and Susan was an educator in the Williamsport area for more than 33 years. Robby was also the brother of Jessica Curry '01.

Robby earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Lycoming and was a brother of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Lycoming football was a way of life for him. As a youngster, Robby was a student manager/water boy for the Warriors. In high school, he served on the "chain crew" at home games. There was never a question in his mind about attending Lycoming and playing football for the Warriors. Robby achieved that goal as a freshman. During his final three years at Lycoming, Robby was the program's head videographer at all games.

The fund was created as a monetary award to be given annually. All head coaches, full-time and part-time, are eligible for consideration for this award. Based on performance during the academic year, criteria include a winning record, both overall and in the conference, and whether the coach achieved the recruiting and roster goals for the year.
