Cooper posts six points as Warriors bow to Blazers

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) notched season highs of four goals and two assists to lead the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team, but a late rally fell short as Hood College was able to withstand the fourth-quarter surge to post a 9-8 Commonwealth Conference win at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Wednesday, April 15.

Cooper was dominant early in the game for the Warriors (2-10 overall, 2-3 Commonwealth), as he scored three goals and added two assists in the game's first 17 minutes to help the team take a 5-2 lead.

However, Hood (6-8 overall, 2-4 Commonwealth) began to roll after that offensively, scoring six straight goals to take an 8-5 lead after a man-up goal with 6:38 left in the third quarter. Cooper responded just 20 seconds later, moving from the left and just in front of the crease to dump in his fourth score.

Hood's Malik Brown scored the game-winner with 2:55 left in the half, spinning from behind the net and finding the corner, but the Warriors rallied valiantly in the fourth quarter. After holding the ball to finish the third to start the fourth with possession thanks to being man-up, freshman Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) stuffed in a goal with 14:26 left. Just over a minute later, Huff found senior Steve Campaniello (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) for a score to make it a one-goal game.

From there, Hood keeper Joey McCulloh denied a flurry of Lycoming shots – 12 in the fourth quarter – making four saves to preserve the win.

Senior Steve Troup (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) finished with two assists and Huff added a goal and an assist. Senior Trevor Williams (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) added a goal, three caused turnovers and three ground balls and senior Joe Marchetti (Cortland, N.Y./Homer) and sophomore Brendan Loftus (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville Township) each caused two turnovers. Junior Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary's) picked up five ground balls and Huff added four, as Lycoming held a 29-21 advantage on the ground.

Alex Villegas led Hood with three goals, as six other players factored into the scoring. James Weger and Zach Kauffman each led the team with four ground balls.

The Warriors finished with 34 shots while holding Hood to 22, but McCulloh was able to make nine saves in the game. Senior goalkeeper Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) stopped six for the Warriors, including three in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, April 18, when they head to Albright College for a 1 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game at Exeter Township High School.
