Wagner’s golden goal lifts Warriors past Pride in double overtime

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The scrum for the faceoff took the ball near the Widener crease by the time junior Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary's) picked it up for the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team. After passing the ball off, the long-stick midfielder slipped in front of the net and found himself in the precarious position of being wide open. Junior Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) found Wagner with a quick pass and he turned and dropped in the shot, giving the Warriors a 7-6 double overtime win over Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon, April 11.

The win gave Lycoming (2-9 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) its first over the Pride (3-8 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) since April 24, 2010, a string of six straight losses. Senior goalkeeper Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) finished with 18 saves, including one in overtime and 11 in the first half, and three ground balls.

Lycoming had to work back from a 6-3 deficit heading into the fourth quarter. Senior Trevor Williams (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) started the rally, when he drove to his right and fired a bounce shot into the left corner, making it 6-4. Late in the quarter, the Warriors called timeout with 3:06 left, which set up a huge goal, as Cooper drove in right and slipped a shot into the left corner from six yards out.

Widener won the ensuing faceoff, but Widener took a shot that hit the side of the caging for Wylly to pick up. After the clear, Williams struck again, getting the ball at the top of the box on the left side. He drove in and bounced a shot into the right corner, tying the game with 1:41 left in the game.

Lycoming won the ensuing faceoff and held for the last shot of regulation, but couldn't get an open look. In the first overtime, both teams struggled to find good shots. Tim Taylor had the best opportunity for the Pride, finding a hole in the Warriors defense and firing a shot that Wylly cut off before it could find the right corner of the net.

In the second overtime, the Warriors scored quickly off the scrum off the faceoff, with Wagner scoring just 23 seconds into the period.

The Warriors scored early in the game, with junior Jake Wanamaker (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) finding the back of the net with 13:56 left in the first quarter. Widener tied the game late in the quarter before senior Steve Campaniello (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) found senior Steve Troup (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) for a score from the left side to make it 2-1 with 8:38 left in the second quarter.

The Pride went on a 5-1 run over the next two quarters, though, taking a 6-3 lead with 11 seconds in the third quarter, setting up the comeback.

Williams finished with two goals and two ground balls to lead the Warriors, and Wagner added a goal and three ground balls. Cooper and Campaniello each had a goal and assist.

Clint Sanders and Marc LaVine led the Pride with two goals and Patrick Richardson added two assists. Tyler Schulte picked up seven ground balls and John Holland added six ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Chris Treat took the loss in net for the Pride, allowing five goals and making two saves in 34 minutes of action. Tyler McClary made nine stops and allowed two goals in the first half.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 15, when they host Hood in another critical Commonwealth Conference game.
