GLENSIDE, Pa. – With a pair of former all-conference players returning from injury, the Lycoming College men's lacrosse used that additional help well on Saturday, March 28, at Easton Field, as Lycoming scored four of the five goals in the second half to post a 7-3 Commonwealth Conference win over Arcadia University.
Â
The Warriors (1-7 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) got the benefit of the return of junior
Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding), who scored the game-winning goal in the third quarter, and senior
Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), who made 10 saves in net to earn the win.
Â
Less than two minutes into the game, the Warriors got on the board, with senior
Trevor Williams (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) finding freshman
Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) for a score to give Lycoming the lead. Senior
Steve Troup (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) added a man-up goal two minutes into the second quarter to give Lycoming a 2-0 lead, but Arcadia (2-5 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth) responded with two goals in a 20-second span midway through the quarter to tie the game.
Â
The Warriors didn't wait long to respond, as senior
Steve Campaniello (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) scored unassisted to take a 3-2 lead and start a four-goal run for Lycoming.
Â
After junior
Jake Wanamaker (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) scored to make it 6-2 with 11:25 left in the fourth quarter, Arcadia cut the lead to three goals with a score with 8:40 left. That was as close as they could get, though, and Troup scored his second goal with 31 seconds left to round out the scoring.
Â
Troup led the Warriors with two goals and an assist and Huff and Cooper each added a goal and an assist. Junior
Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary's) picked up four ground balls and caused a turnover and sophomore
Kyle Armstrong (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) added three ground balls and won 8-of-13 faceoffs. Junior
James Ahrens (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) also posted three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Â
Danny Riley led the Knights with three assists, while Ryan Donovan, Ryan Green and Sean McDonald all scored. Billy Van Dyke picked up four ground balls and Casey Fayen added three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Â
Wylly stopped five shots in the first quarter while keeping Arcadia off the scoreboard and he added three more in the fourth quarter to preserve the win, as he finished the day with 10 stops. A.J. Beck (1-3) finished with eight saves for the Knights.
Â
The Warriors get back in action on Wednesday, April 1, when they host Lebanon Valley in a Commonwealth Conference battle at 3:30 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
