DALLAS, Pa. – Senior
Steve Campaniello (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) led the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team with a goal, an assist and three ground balls, but Misericordia University used a four-goal first half to hang on for a 6-3 non-conference win on an overcast Sunday, March 21, at Mangelsdorf Field.
Â
The Warriors (0-7 overall), playing without injured senior goalkeeper
Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), put together one of their best defensive efforts of the season with freshman
Will McAndrew (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) stepping into the cage and making 14 saves. Meanwhile, the team caused seven turnovers and picked up 33 ground balls, with 27 coming in the course of play and not off faceoffs.
Â
The offense was also aggressive, firing 35 shots, the team's second-most this year, led by nine from junior
Jake Wanamaker (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick).
Â
Misericordia (3-3 overall) scored the first two goals of the game, taking a 2-0 lead into the second quarter when the Warriors struck on the power play, with Campaniello finding freshman
Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) for the score with 13:43 left. However, a transition goal helped Misericordia keep control, adding a fourth goal midway through the quarter before senior
Steve Troup (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) scored with 16 seconds left in the half on a dish from senior
Kieran McLaughlin (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts).
Â
Misericordia added a goal early in the third quarter before Campaniello struck unassisted to close within two goals, where it stayed for the next 15 minutes before Misericordia added an insurance goal to round out the scoring with 9:34 left in the fourth quarter.
Â
Junior
Lee Pappas (New Windsor, Md./Glenelg Country School) led the Warriors with six ground balls and both senior
Thomas Hanson (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) and junior
Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary's) caused two turnovers and picked up three ground balls.
Â
Pat Kellish led the Cougars with two goals and an assist and Lane Kocovsky added a goal and two assists. Chris Fleming also scored twice. Patrick Johnson added 13 saves in goal and Pat Newins led the team with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.
