Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Warriors fall to Knights, 7-5

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Juniors Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Jake Wanamaker (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) each scored two goals to lead the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team in its season opener, but SUNY Geneseo scored the last two goals to post a 7-5 win on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

The Warriors (0-1 overall) started the game well, scoring on their first possession, as freshman Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) drove in for a score. Geneseo (0-1 overall) responded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter, though.

The Warriors responded in kind, scoring three goals to start the second quarter, with Wanamaker delivering his first score before Cooper found the net for back-to-back scores on gives from junior Lee Pappas (New Windsor, Md./Glenelg Country School), taking a 4-2 lead.

The Knights took the lead with three goals before halftime, as Steve Cregan scored twice to tie the game and Tim Wright gave the Knights the lead.

The Warriors tied the game at five to start the third quarter with Huff finding Wanamaker for his second tally. However, Geneseo answered when Tim Wright found Ryan Gulbransen for the game-winner with 9:27 left in the third.

Thanks to a great effort from senior goalkeeper Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), who stopped seven shots in the second half, the Knights couldn't expand on the lead until Cory Gleasman scored an insurance goal with 3:04 left.

Cooper added five ground balls, as Lycoming picked up 33 in the game, with junior Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary's) also picking up five ground balls. Senior Thomas Hanson (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Wright led the Knights with two goals and two assists and Cregan also added two scores. Parker Weeks, who won 9-of-15 at the faceoff circle, led the team with seven ground balls, as Geneseo scooped up 30 in the game.

The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, Feb. 28, when they host Gwynedd Mercy at the Shangraw Athletic Complex at 1 p.m.
