Warriors roll past Fighting Scots, 77-64

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With a 19-2 run that encapsulated the end of the first half and the start of the second half, the Lycoming College men's basketball team broke away from Gordon College and ran to a 77-64 non-conference win at Lamade Gym on Saturday, Dec. 12.

The Warriors (6-2 overall) placed three in double figures, as Lycoming shot a solid 43 percent (28-of-65) from the floor and used 19 Gordon turnovers to score 16 points, while Gordon (4-5 overall) shot just 31 percent (19-of-62) and 27 percent (7-of-26) from 3-point range.

Freshman T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) notched 17 points, two blocks and two steals and sophomore Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) also added 17 points and eight rebounds. Junior Nykolas King (Harlem, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science & Math) posted his first double-double of the season, notching 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Warriors dominated the inside-game, scoring 40 points in the paint while limiting Gordon to just 18, as they shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the field in the second half while holding Gordon to 22 percent (7-of-32) to notch the win.

Having fought through five ties and 11 lead changes, the Warriors began to take control in the final minute of the first half. Junior David Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) hit a jumper with 1:13 to stop a mini-five point run from Gordon and give Lycoming a 34-33 lead. After a steal by Duckett, Johnson hit a free throw. Duckett then came up big again, with a  block, which led to a fastbreak layup by King to make it 37-33.

The Fighting Scots used a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left to make it a two-point game, but Duckett came through again, collecting a loose ball after it was knocked away and then knocking down an off-balance 3-pointer as time expired in the half.

Lycoming came out continuing to fire in the second half, with Duckett hitting a layup to start a run of 11 straight points to open the half, making it 51-35 with 16:10 left. The Fighting Scots cut the lead down to eight points with 8:58 left and stayed within eight points for the next three minutes, but a second-chance layup in the paint by Newbold with 5:53 left gave Lycoming a 60-50 lead and Gordon couldn't get it back to single digits in the remaining moments.

Sophomore Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Pa./Calvert Hall) finished with nine points and four rebounds and junior Willie Kee (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) added six points.

Eric Demers led the Fighting Scots with 20 points, four rebounds and two assists. Garrisson Duvivier added 11 points and 10 rebounds and Noah Szilagyi added 11 points and three assists. Sam Johnson finished seven points and 13 rebounds.
