Warriors set to host Widener in MAC Commonwealth semifinals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Riding a school-record 16-game unbeaten streak, the No. 1-seed Lycoming College men's soccer team will look to continue a magical run when it hosts No. 4-seed Widener University in a Commonwealth Conference Tournament semifinal match on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex at 2 p.m.

Tickets for the game will be available at both the Mulberry Street gate for $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. Children under six are free. Long-sleeve championship T-shirts will be available for $15.

The Warriors are hosting a MAC Commonwealth Tournament game for the third straight year for the first time in program history and they will be looking to reach the conference championship for a third year in a row as well.

In 2014, the Warriors hosted Arcadia in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals, taking a 2-0 lead before Arcadia fought back to tie the game and force overtime, where freshman Jordan Logan (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute. The Warriors hosted Lebanon Valley in an instant classic first round game in 2013. The game, which started at 3 p.m., extended into double overtime locked in a scoreless draw when darkness fell over the Shangraw Athletic Complex. After an hour delay, the game was moved to the lighted-Balls Mills Soccer Complex, where the Warriors won with less than three minutes left in double overtime on a header by current assistant coach Connor McNiff.

This season, the Warriors enter the conference tournament with a 14-1-2 overall record and a 7-0-1 MAC Commonwealth mark. The team has emerged as one of the top teams in the Mid-Atlantic Region, sitting third in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region rankings and fourth in the NSCAA rankings. They are also the top team also receiving votes in the NSCAA national rankings and sitting second in the receiving votes section in D3soccer.com's poll.

The Warriors lead the MAC Commonwealth in scoring offense (2.71) and goals-against average (0.57), where the team sits 18th in the nation.

The team is paced by three first-team all-conference selections in sophomore midfielders Abdullahi Abdi (Seattle, Wash./James Garfield) and Jordan Logan (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) and 2015 MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Year Kyle Thomas (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright).

Logan leads the team with 29 points, as he is third in the MAC Commonwealth with 0.76 goals per game and he is second nationally with seven game-winning goals. Abdi has complimented Logan by notching 26 points, as he leads the league with 0.47 assists per game and he is fifth with 0.53 goals. Thomas leads the team with 1,535 minutes played and he has helped the team post 10 shutouts this season, which is tied for the second-most in program history.

Widener improved to 9-9-1 overall with a 3-2 double-overtime win over Arcadia in the first round of the MAC Commonwealth Tournament on Monday, Nov. 2. The team was led by two goals, including the game-winner in the 107th minute from Kevin McKenna, while First Team All-MAC Commonwealth midfielder Tori Remondelli also scored in the game.

In the first meeting between the two squads on Oct. 31, the Warriors scored twice in the second half and held on for a 2-0 win. Sophomores Duc Momo (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Keenthy Yeboah (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) scored for the Warriors.

The winner of Wednesday's match will move on to the Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship, where they will face the winner of the other semifinal between No. 3-seed Lebanon Valley and No. 2-seed Messiah. The game will be played on Saturday, Nov. 7, at a site and time to be announced.
