Mueller scores 18 as Warriors fall to William Paterson

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Sophomore Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) kicked off the 2015-16 campaign with a career-high 18-point game to lead the Lycoming College women's basketball team on Friday night, Nov. 13, but William Paterson had three players finish in double figures to post a 66-56 win at the Griffin Complex in the opening round of the Gwynedd Mercy University Tip-Off Tournament.
 
Mueller also added three blocks and three steals to lead the Warriors (0-1 overall), who shot 35 percent (22-of-62) from the floor. Senior Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) added nine points, five rebounds and four steals and freshman Jenn Grove (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) added eight points, three rebounds and two steals.
 
Junior Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) notched seven points, five assists and five rebounds and freshman Becca Painter (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) notched six points and two rebounds.
 
Lycoming took an early lead in the first quarter, with a steal and fastbreak layup by Henderson putting the Warriors up 10-6 midway through the first quarter, but the Pioneers (1-0 overall) closed the quarter with a 15-14 lead thanks to a 9-4 run. Lycoming took the lead back in the second quarter, but a 15-6 run gave the Pioneers a 35-26 lead with 1:36 left before halftime. Calella cut the lead to six with a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to make it a six-point game at the break.
 
In the third quarter, Lycoming cut the lead to four, but a seven-point run helped William Patterson get the lead to 48-37 before Lycoming closed it out with five points, all from Mueller to go into the final quarter down 48-42.
 
William Patterson took control in the final 10 minutes, going on a 16-7 run in the first eight minutes to seal the win.
 
Ariana Gomez led the Pioneers with 14 points and seven rebounds, Brittany Harden posted 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals and Sara Luberto notched 12 points and two assists, as the Pioneers shot 42 percent from the field (25-of-60).
 
The Warriors face Ursinus in the consolation game of the GMU Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 12 p.m.
