Warriors fall to first-place Mustangs

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Three Lycoming College women's basketball players finished in double figures, but a hot-shooting and hot-rebounding first-place Stevenson University squad was able to separate late in the second half for a 76-51 win in Commonwealth Conference action at Lamade Gym on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 17.
 
Freshman Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) led the Warriors (10-6 overall, 3-5 Commonwealth) with 12 points and nine rebounds, senior Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) posted 11 points, five rebounds and a steal and junior Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) added 10 points.
 
The Mustangs (13-2 overall, 7-0 Commonwealth) were led by 20 points and 14 rebounds from Sara Tarbert and 11 points, three rebounds and three assists from Kayla Kelly, as the team shot 46 percent from the floor.
 
Stevenson opened the game on a 16-1 run in the first five minutes and never trailed in the game, but the Warriors worked back into the game throughout the first half, cutting the lead down to seven points with 10:41 on a layup by Mueller. The Mustangs got the lead back to 17 points at 31-14 with 6:36 left in the first half, but Lycoming closed the half on a 15-9 run to cut the lead to 11 points at the break.
 
In the second half, the Warriors played close with the Mustangs for the first 12 minutes of the half, closing within nine points twice, the last when freshman Haley Sipple (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) hit a layup on a feed from senior Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) with 11:00 left.
 
The Mustangs closed the game out on a 18-4 run in the final eight minutes, though to pull away and win its seventh straight conference game.
 
Derr finished with nine points, three rebounds and two assists and Sipple added a career-high seven points for the Warriors, who won the battle of turnovers, 22-20, as the two teams are the top teams in the Commonwealth Conference in turnover margin.
 
Kyarra Harmon finished with nine points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Mustangs and Stephanie Martinez added nine points and three steals. Ty Bender also added nine points and three assists.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Monday, Jan. 19, when they step out of conference for the last time this season at King's. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
