Warriors down Penn College, 3-1, in opener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) posted 11 kills and sophomore Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) each notched nine kills to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Penn College in the team's 2014 season opener on Friday evening, Aug. 29, at Bardo Gym.
 
Richardson hit a solid .473 in the match and added five digs and three blocks to lead the Warriors (1-0 overall). Jahn added nine kills and 15 digs and Slawson finished with nine kills, seven digs and two blocks.
 
The Warriors won the first two sets before Penn College (0-1 overall) edged Lycoming in the third set. The Warriors rebounded with a win in the fourth to clinch the team's 12th straight victory over the Wildcats.
 
Freshman Catherine Burger (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) notched four kills, 24 assists, six digs, four blocks in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Haley Deibert (Sacramento, Pa./Tri-Valley) added 11 assists and three digs.
 
Sophomore Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) and sophomore Tayler Whitman (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) each notched six kills, with Fink added 17 digs and two aces and Whitman posting six digs and four blocks.
 
Defensively, the squad was led by 25 digs from senior libero Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and 23 from senior Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon).
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Aug. 30, when they head back to Bardo Gym to wrap up the quad-meet, facing Wilkes at 10 a.m. and Baptist Bible at 12 p.m.
