Box Score 2 WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore
Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) hit a game-tying double with two outs in the seventh inning and then scored the winning run in the first game and then hit a two-run double to key a rally in the second game to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader sweep of Albright College, 3-2 and 6-5, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Friday, April 18.
Besides the importance of the doubles, Witmer's pair of two-baggers also helped her break the school record for doubles in the season, with the game-tying double tying the mark of 11 set by Jess Nabholz in 2010 and her two-run double in the second game breaking the record with her 12th double of the season.
The Warriors improved to 13-18 overall and 6-10 in the Commonwealth Conference, wrapping up the conference slate with the second-most wins in league play since joining the Commonwealth Conference in 2007.
Sophomore
Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) (10-9) was outstanding in the circle, recording all but one out for the Warriors in the doubleheader while allowing just six hits and one earned run to earn both victories and lower her season ERA to 2.58 and become the 12
th pitcher in school history to win 10 games in a season.
In the first game, a pair of critical Albright miscues helped Lycoming score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with a 3-2 win.
With one out in the inning, Weaver nearly got the rally going with a shot into the hole on the left side, but the Albright shortstop Jalene Garcia made the stop and a strong throw to get Weaver by half a step for the second out.
Freshman
Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) followed with a single up the middle to start the rally. Junior
Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge Area) hit a long fly ball that tipped off the Albright center fielder's glove and rolled to the fence to score Kunes. Witmer followed with a double just inside the third base bag that rolled down the line to tie the game. Sophomore
Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) followed with a liner off the pitcher's glove to reach and then, when the second baseman came in to try and shuffle a throw to first, the throw went wild, allowing Witmer to score from second and give the Warriors their first walk-off win of the year at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
In the first inning, an error, a seeing-eye single and a two-RBI double by Natalie Carlucci helped the Lions take an early 2-0 lead.
After that, Weaver was dominant in the circle, allowing just one more hit and a walk in the game. She retired the last 10 she faced in the three-hitter. She walked one and struck out four while completing her 15
th game of the season.
Katie Civitello took the loss for the Lions, allowing nine hits and no earned runs in the complete game. She walked two and struck out two.
The Warriors wrapped nine hits in the game, with Weaver finishing 2-for-4, Kunes going 2-for-3 with a run and sophomore
Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg, Pa.) went 2-for-3.
Down by four runs late in the second game, the Warriors rallied with five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to notch a 6-5 win to sweep the doubleheader.
The Warriors started to rally with a three-run fifth inning, as sophomore
Ashley Burger (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) started it with a single. With a pinch runner installed, freshman
Emma Fredericks (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by sophomore
Shawna Risley (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area). After a strikeout, sophomore
Chelsey Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) drew a four-pitch walk and each runner moved up on a groundout, setting up a two-RBI double to left by Witmer.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Warriors continued to rally, with Kunes starting the rally on a single through the right side. She moved to second on a sac bunt and then scored when Risley delivered a single past the third baseman. Risley moved to second on an error on the play, helping her score on a single into left by Novak, giving Lycoming a 6-5 lead.
The Lions got going in the first inning, scoring four runs on six hits, which included three doubles. Lycoming cut into the lead in the second inning, as Kunes hit a two-out single and sophomore
Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) followed with a double over the right fielder's head to make it 4-1.
The Lions regained the four-run lead thanks to a hit and an outfield error in the third, setting up the Lycoming rally.
Risley went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI to pace the Warriors and Kunes went 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk, as the team knocked out nine hits.
Civitello led the Lions, as she went 3-for-4 with a run, a double and two RBI. Natalie Carlucci went 2-for-4 with a run.
After replacing the starting pitcher one out into the game, Weaver came on to pitch 6 2/3 innings of three-hit balls. She allowed one unearned run and a walk while striking out four. Civitello (7-17) tossed six innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs. She walked two and struck out two.
The Warriors get back on the field as they wrap up the 2014 season on Saturday, April 26, when they face Elizabethtown in a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
