Witmer leads Warriors at Misericordia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DALLAS, Pa. – Sophomore Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) had a hit in each game and sophomore Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) tossed a four-hitter to lead the Lycoming College softball team, but Misericordia University was able to post 1-0 and 8-0 wins in a doubleheader sweep at Anderson Field on Thursday afternoon, April 10.

Witmer finished the doubleheader 2-for-5 to lead the Warriors (10-13 overall), which combined for just six hits in the twinbill.

In the first game, Weaver tossed a four-hitter, striking out two in the process, but a second-inning run helped Misericordia (11-11 overall) post a 1-0 win.

Weaver stranded the Cougars with the bases loaded in the first inning, but in the second inning, a single by Sam Hare to lead off led to the only run in the game. She advanced on a sacrifice and scored on a one-out single by Melanie Quintanilla.

The Warriors (10-13 overall) had three players reach scoring position in the game and nearly had a run score fifth inning, but junior Kali Moeller (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) was caught trying to reach home on a crazy play. With one out and Moeller on second base, Weaver hit a ball into right field and was thrown out at first. Moeller was then cut down trying to score on the play.

Weaver (7-7) finished with six innings pitched, one run and two walks. Bailee Schies (1-0) threw six innings, allowing three hits, two walks and she struck out three. Alissa Steier earned the save, striking out one in a 1-2-3 inning.

In the second game, the Cougars jumped out with six runs in the first three innings en route to an 8-0 five-inning run-rule shortened game.

The Cougars scored four runs in the second inning, capping the inning with a two-run homer from Megan Hardy. They added two more runs in the third inning, using two errors in the frame and clinched the win in the fifth inning, as the Cougars notched three hits to score two runs to finish off the win.

Megan Gowe went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI and Hardy went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI to lead the Cougars. Kristi Seiler also went 2-for-2.

Jess Armillay earned the win for Misericordia, as she allowed three hits, a walk and struck out three. Junior Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) (0-1) took the loss for Lycoming, allowing 12 hits and six earned runs in the complete game. She walked three and struck out five.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, April 12, when they host Arcadia in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
