NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Three-run innings in the third and sixth helped lead the Lycoming College softball team to a 6-2 win over the University of Mount Union on a blustery, Wednesday, March 6, at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
Â
The Warriors (5-2 overall) postponed their second game of the day against the Purple Raiders (3-4-1 overall) due to rain that began at the end of the game and will make it up on Friday, March 7 at 11:30 a.m. at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
Â
Sophomore
Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) (3-1) was again solid in the circle, retiring the last seven batters she faced and tossing a complete-game seven hitter. She allowed two runs and struck out five.
Â
The Warriors began to rally in the third inning when sophomore
Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) singled with one out before freshman
Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) and junior
Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge Area) followed with singles to load the bases for sophomore
Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor), who drove in a run with the team's fourth straight hit. After a flyout, sophomore
Shawna Risley (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) delivered a two-RBI single.
Â
The Raiders closed within a run in the bottom of the fifth, using three hits to score two runs before Weaver got a strikeout looking to end the threat.
Â
In the top of sixth, the Warriors responded, though, as Risley hit a one-out single before sophomore
Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) hit a double. After a groundout, a walk loaded the bases for Novak, who delivered her third hit of the game. Kunes followed with an RBI walk and Marianelli also knocked in a run with a single.
Â
The four-run cushion was more than enough for Weaver, who retired the last six batters in order.
